Focus on Reading  Reading in fourth grade is a transition from learning to read to reading to learn.  Common Core focus will include an increase in comprehension skills and the application of those skills to complex text.  There is a focus on informational text: 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction.  The focus on writing includes composing argument essays, information/explanation essays, and narrative essays.  Increase in sustained independent reading for longer periods of time.

Math Thinking  According to new Common Core Standards we are focusing on deep understanding of math concepts  No longer just 2x2=4 but WHY does 2x2=4? What strategies can I use to show my work?  Students will need to explain thinking in writing.

Falcon Planner  Check every night!  The Falcon Planner is a critical communication tool between parents and teachers  Homework and test information will be written down daily.  Check also for any quick notes from me!

Homework  Students should be reading EVERY night  Students should be bringing home their math notebooks to help them with their homework  The homework that is given is REVIEW of what we already taught  STUDENTS should be doing their homework  Please assist your child by making sure that the homework AND planner have been placed in their backpacks for return to school the next day!

Checking Your Child ’ s Progress  Math tests will be sent home and need to be signed and returned. This lets me know that you are aware of how your child did on the assessment!  Student ’ s class work AND homework will be sent home in take home folders, make sure to look through their work see how they are doing!

Promoting Independence  In fourth grade students have certain expectations: students need to come to school on time, they need to have all supplies and materials ready, and they need to have a positive attitude!  Students should be doing their own work and responsible for their own things (parents should be CHECKING not doing)

October Conferences  I will be scheduling a conference with EVERY parent in October.  A letter will be sent home with your child shortly. Look for it to fill out what time slot you would like!  On the letter you will need to pick a 1st choice, 2nd choice, and 3rd choice.

Fourth Grade Field Trips  Stone Mountain - October 29, 2014  Carolina Beach - April, 2015  We need lots of chaperones!  All chaperones MUST complete a DPS volunteer form and be approved to chaperone. You can fill out a volunteer form by going to the Forest View homepage - and click ONLINE APPLICATION under the heading “ Volunteer for Forest View ” `

Get Classroom Text Messages!  I will be using a program this year called Remind101. It will send out text messages directly to your cell phone!  To join my class: -Follow the instructions on the handout!

Website Information  My website is  It can also be accessed through the Forest View Website.  Updated weekly (sometimes more)  All important information will be laid out on the website.  Check often!

Class Dojo  Class Dojo is a behavior management system.  Tracks student progress with points.  Has a messaging feature to communicate.  Can be accessed by parents to check progress and behaviors.  No more “How is my child doing?”
