D. Greenfield CLRC1 End-cap Engineering Status Report Debbie Greenfield, RAL UK-V 30 October 2002

D. Greenfield CLRC2 Pipe Bending - UTI l Quote obtained from UTI to bend production quantities of main point wiggly pipes. l They will use annealed pipes, ID 3.6mm, 70 micron wall, filled with cerrabend. l Before production need to: »Develop annealing specification »Improve cerrabend removal l Quote was very high »will get alternative quote from another supplier »have asked UTI to rethink

D. Greenfield CLRC3 Pipe Bending - RAL l Second point cooling circuit l R=15mm l Successful bending with continuous double bends l Tim Jones measured cross-section »Cross section reduced to 88% »Will increase pressure drop by 31% »Could increase second point pipe diameter l Continuing to develop technique and tooling l Will use either 4.2mm OD barrel cooling pipe or ~4mmOD interface joining pipe (need to double check pressure drops)

D. Greenfield CLRC4 CC Blocks l Main blocks: »If split required will make up material sandwich with PEEK »Then machine complete block »Soldering tests seem okay l Second point blocks »Will be made from two pieces to obtain necessary accuracy and minimise forces on bends »Being prototyped at the moment l Carbon-carbon material »More material obtained, Cu plated, waiting for H-G to test »Visited Dunlop, obtained different material, H-G will test this »If can use JET or brake material then small lead time »Lead time for special material 6 months

D. Greenfield CLRC5 Cooling l Recent tests: l New CuNi straight pipe »CC and Al blocks - completely split l Geneva module »First baseline partially split block »Then completely split block (PEEK sandwich)

D. Greenfield CLRC6 Grounding and Shielding l Much discussion including meeting during SCT week l Proposal for engineering implementation now on EDMS »ATL-IS-EN-0014 l Tim Jones made some measurements of resistances l Ian has designed foil layout for disc l Need to do soldering tests to pipes and plating tests of Ni/Cu/Au on Al foil l PPF0 redesigned to include provision for grounding l Still much work to do

D. Greenfield CLRC7 Prototyping l Liverpool disc mock-up »Full disc »Used for module assembly trials »Will be complete mechanical mock-up with pipes, cooling blocks and services l Sheffield cylinder mock-up »>1/4 circumference, full length, cylinder with several ‘discs’ and patch panels »Will be used for assembly trials »Will include PPF0 and all on-cylinder services

D. Greenfield CLRC8 Prototyping - Lead Disc Prototype l Will use Cheapo - l Currently being equipped with pre-production inserts. Will then be machined to finalise that process l Arrival at RAL - end November 2002 l Will then be equipped, using assembly tooling, with at least 1/4 disc worth of pre-production: »Pipes and blocks »Wiggly tapes »Optical harness »Alignment components »DCS components »Patch panels l Will then go to Liverpool for module assembly testing l Ultimately will go to CERN for system test
