ATLAS ID Services Mock Up - Proposal Presented by Ian Wilmut at DESY, update from John Hill 4th May, 20101ATLAS Upgrade - RAL

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL2 Statement from Ian Wilmut talk given at LBL January 2009 It would be nice to build service modules in a pre- fabricated standard way that: Could be installed in one piece Carried cooling, power and data (maybe) together Could be “customised” to fit the correct segment either in situ, or in some custom dummy structure Could be pre-tested and in the case of service failure could be removed and replaced

3ATLAS Upgrade - RAL At the last engineering meeting… We showed our intent to build a service mock-up to try out our service ideas. We enquired of the community if they wanted to contribute to this effort. We have had no feedback on this so are proceeding with a system that fits our needs. We would like to extend what we do to fit with other ideas The images to the right is a reminder of what was shown before… 4th May, 2010 3ATLAS Upgrade - RAL

4th May, 20104ATLAS Upgrade - RAL Present thinking behind the ID mock up We now think that a half size mock up is better than a quadrant. We have the room available for this at RAL and mechanically it will be easier to construct than a quadrant. Mock up will be built in three sections (slices), more manageable for transportation. Initial studies will focus on barrel cooling arrangement and trials on pipe welding. Half section gives us the ability to trial several ideas/arrangements in different areas, and to make side by side comparisons between ideas.

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL5 Three Sections, constructed from wood and Uni-strut support structure Sections bolted together

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL6 Insert Barrel section with stave arrangement Introduce elements of the proposed services

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL7 Trial fit of cables and cooling services. Ability to try out welding procedures on pipes and check envelopes

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL8 Future possibilities to develop mock up further......

4th May, 2010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL9 Have already started to assemble main structure of mock up, three sections required for completion.

Plans Aim to complete ‘basic’ mock-up structure by July Then start fabricating service modules (bend pipes, service duct structure....) Welder is presently at RAL so one of the first tasks will be to try and weld pipes in in situ (July/August) Tests have started at RAL to see if we can weld in proximity of modules –Provisional results are promising First key issue to understand is the practicalities of fitting in the weld head. –This will include understanding re- work and repair scenarios. Manifolds and PP connectors would be looked at next Potential to trial other detector services and structures 4th May, 201010ATLAS Upgrade - RAL

Summary We are preparing to start building mock-up. Our thoughts have moved onto a half sector We are still enthusiastic about incorporating other service proposals. Please get in contact is that is useful to you First area of investigation will be practicalities of welding – this is a parallel effort to welding close to electronics trials. We hope to have the ID structure and have started routing services by late June. 4th May, 201011ATLAS Upgrade - RAL
