1 RAL Integration Issues MICE Collaboration Meeting, Osaka, August 1-3, 2004 Elwyn Baynham, Paul Drumm, Yury Ivanyushenkov, Tony Jones RAL

2 Layout Beam height Support structure Beam line shielding layout Scope

3 MICE layout

4 Concrete floor Support structure Dia 650 Aperture in ISIS wall 1684.2 160* 1524* Height of MICE beam

5 MICE support structure : Concept Requirements/specification: - to move MICE modules out the beam (to the side direction) for various MICE stages ( Qs: Do we need to move ALL modules?; Is the side direction preferable?) Accuracy/tolerances: - along the beam +/- 1 mm - across the beam +/- 1 mm (Q: What position accuracy is required for module-to-module connection ?) Adjustment: - adjustment possibility is required. Locking mechanism: - required. Loads: - max load is 3 (?) tonnes. Force transfer function: - gravity force to the floor; - module-to-module axial force to the floor ?

6 MICE support structure : Options Commercial rail system: - usually high accuracy (+/- 0.1 mm ) ( Q: Do we need it?) - proven design; - delivery times – days ( if off-the-shelf product); BUT high cost. Simple slides arrangement: - accuracy; - cost; - prototype.

9 Concrete floor Simple slides arrangement MICE support structure: Alternative solution Rails Low-friction material blocks Sliding carriages Platform

10 MICE support structure vs. MICE stages Problem: some of MICE modules will be located in various positions along the beam for different stages of the experiment. Possible solution: sliding rails (rails on rails). Concrete floor Platform Steel plate HEPCO rail system Beam Bottom rails 20 40 80 20 160* MICE module

11 Beam line and shielding layout Beam line shielding: shields MICE against full beam loss in the ISIS beam pipe (-> 2m of steel is required); is removable for access to PSI solenoid; ideally allows to work on the beam line components in the MICE hall even when the ISIS beam is on -> concept of temporary shielding.

12 Beam line and shielding layout

13 Steel shielding Concrete shielding 17-tonne magnet PSI solenoid Crane zone limits ISIS wall Beam line shielding Existing steel shielding

14 PSI solenoid support structure and shielding Concrete ISIS wall Steel shielding

15 Temporary shielding arrangement These two magnets are in Off-beam position PSI solenoid is in Test position Temporary steel shielding

16 Next steps MICE general layout: - start implementing MICE sub-systems (RF power system, hydrogen system etc.) and magnetic shielding (requires more modelling). Support structure: - agree on requirement/specs; - agree on concept; - get cost estimations for various options. Beam line and shielding layout: - finish detailed design; - get OK from ISIS Radiation Safety Officer
