The M.A.I.N Causes of WW1

Militarism Definition: Policy of aggressive preparedness European nations began arming to protect their assets Increased size and strength of military. Caused Europe to become extremely unstable.

Alliances European nations formed alliances to create a balance of power throughout Europe.

The Great Powers of Europe Triple Alliance (Central Powers) Germany Austria-Hungary Ottoman Empire Triple Entente (Allied Powers) Great Britain France Russia Italy joined the allied powers because of disagreements.

Imperialism -European countries began to compete to gain territory -By the late 1800’s, Britain was the world’s largest imperialist power. -Britain, France, and Germany were competing for many territories around the world, most notably in Africa.

Nationalism the desire of independent nations for dominance and prestige. Pride in one’s nation This caused Europe to become very unstable in the early 1900’s as nations competed to dominate each other. Any spark would send Europe into total war

WAR Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbs  Russia promised to protect the Serbs and mobilize its troops.  Germany sees this as an act of aggression and declares war on Russia.  Germany declares war on France to protect their back door.  Germany invades Belgium  Great Britain pledged to defend Belgium and declares war on Germany. **** War has Begun!
