3 Nationalism Pride in one’s country
created major rivalries among the European Nations.

4 Imperialism a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. caused many countries in Europe to come into conflict. Competition for Colonies created major problems.

5 Militarism grew out of the desire to have an empire. If a country had an empire they needed an army to defend it. They would also need a navy. As a result, European countries spent fortunes on building up their military.

6 Alliance Systems Group of nations that worked together to achieve a common goal Europe was divided into two major alliance systems. These Alliances ultimately brought Europe into WWI.

7 Triple Entente England, France, Russia---During WWI these were the “Allies”

8 Triple Alliance Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy

9 Central Powers During WWI, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire made up the “Central Powers” Ottoman Empire: a Turkish sultanate of southwestern Asia and northeastern Africa and southeastern Europe

10 II. War Breaks out A. World War I breaks out over an incident in the Balkan Peninsula.

11 B. While visiting Sarajevo, the Archduke
Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria- Hungary throne, was assassinated along with his wife. *Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia

14 C. The assassin was a Serbian Nationalist by
the name of Gavrilo Princip. He Belonged to “The Black Hand”.

15 D. Following the assassination, the Alliances caused Europe to go to war…

16 1. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. 2
1. Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. 2. Russia declares war on Austria-Hungary. 3. Germany declares war on Russia, and then France. 4. In Attacking France, Germany invades Belgium which brings them and England into the war.
