West of England’s Young Placemakers’ Programme Joint Spatial Plan November 2015 With support from the staff and students at:

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan A new Joint Spatial Plan is being created by the four local authorities of the West of England. When approved, the document will identify the amount of homes and employment land that will be needed in the period to It will also guide where this growth should be directed. Everyone is invited to have their say. This session allows you to contribute through the first part of the West of England’s Young Placemakers’ Programme.

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan What are the strengths of living in the West of England? What are the current challenges? Name the three that you feel are most significant. Please provide your comments on the worksheet supplied. Question one

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Over the next twenty years the population of the West of England is expected to increase. In the period to 2036 there is a predicted need to provide 85,000 more homes in the Bristol area (further homes will be needed in and around Bath). Around 56,000 homes are already planned for, or are likely to arise through small scale development. However, land for a further 29,000 homes will need to be found.

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan By 2036 the West of England will be one of Europe’s fastest growing and most prosperous sub regions with the gap between disadvantaged and other communities closed and a rising quality of life for all. The rich and diverse environmental character will be integral to health and economic prosperity. Patterns of development and transport will facilitate healthy and sustainable lifestyles. Existing and new communities will be well integrated, attractive and desirable places and supported by the necessary infrastructure. New development will be designed to be resilient to, and reduce the impacts of climate change. The 2036 vision

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Question two Establishing priorities Do you agree with the vision that is included in the emerging Joint Spatial Plan? If you answer ‘no’ or ‘partly’ then briefly explain your answer on the worksheet. Should there be some additional aspirations?.

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Question three Establishing priorities A series of objectives are presented on the worksheet. What ones are most relevant for the West of England in the period to 2036? Select the eight that you feel are most significant and rank them from 1 to 8 (high to lower priority)..

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Looking ahead: Help us visualise what 2036 might be like by time travelling to the future and reporting back on how work, shopping, travelling, learning or spending time with friends has changed since In explaining the change try and tell us what you would like to see happen! Question four

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Developing the strategy The worksheet provides a series of statements about the future development of the West of England. For each, outline the extent to which you agree or disagree. Image source: Nick Smith, UWE Bristol Question five

A MORE EVEN SPREAD OF DEVELOPMENT – BRISTOL AND OTHER TOWNS This scenario explores the benefits of a more even spread of development across the area. Rather than focusing solely on Bristol it recognises that the West of England is a diverse area with a wide range of towns, villages and cities each possessing different qualities and offering different opportunities. This scenario could use different locations for development, potentially including a mix of urban extensions, town expansions and development in other settlements.. D

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan FOCUS ON A NEW SETTLEMENT OR A LIMITED NUMBER OF EXPANDED SETTLEMENTS This scenario considers opportunities to concentrate development into a single or small number of strategic new locations which would complement the overall functioning of the plan area.. E

West of England I Joint Spatial Plan Select the scenario that you feel has greatest merit Outline four arguments that could be used to justify the scenario you have chosen. Question six Remember to complete the details at the end of the survey if you would like to be entered for the prize draw! Winners will be notified in mid February Based on this exercise you might also want to complete the full consultation form that is available online:
