The Giver By: Lois Lowry

Characters Jonas The Giver

Jonas  Jonas is a boy.  He is 11 years old.  Jonas is given a very big job!

The Receiver  The Receiver is an old man.  He knows every memory that has happened.  He is very important.

STOP! Quiz Time!

 Jonas is an 11 year old boy. He lives in a place that is safe. There are a lot of rules. Everyday in this place is the same.

 The place where Jonas lives has no animals, no sun, and no rain. They do not even have colors or music!

 The people in this place do not want to be different. They all want to be the same.  They say the same things, do the same times, and act the same.

STOP! Quiz Time!

 The people do not make any choices.  They do not pick anything.  Husbands and wives are picked by The Elders.

 The Elders are a group of older people who make choices for people.  They pair people to be married.

 Every family can have two kids.

 When a baby is born, it stays at the Nurturing Center until it is one year old. Then it is given to a family.

 At age 12, the kids are told what job they will have.

 Jonas has a birthday and is now 12. He is very smart, courageous, and special. He is given a good job!

 Jonas is going to be the new Receiver. He will know all of the memories from the past.

 Jonas knows that his new job is important. He has to learn how he does his job from The Receiver.

 The Receiver has to share all of the good and bad memories with Jonas.  Jonas gave him a new name. He calls him The Giver.

 Jonas has all of the good and bad memories. He now knows that people can live a life where things are different.  Not everyone and everything has to be the same.

 ONLY Jonas and The Giver know the good and bad memories.  The people do not know any of the good and bad memories.

 Jonas and The Given make a plan to change the place that they live in.

 To change the place that he lives, Jonas has to leave.

 Jonas goes somewhere far, far away. It was a hard trip to make.

 Jonas sees a lot of the things and stories that he learned about from The Giver.

 The truth and memories can now start going back to the place where Jonas came from.

 The people can know the truth. They do not have to be the same, they can be different.  The people can know the good and bad things.
