Computer and Monitor How to Turn Them On and Off Correctly

Objective  The learner will demonstrate the ability to turn on and off the computer, laptop and monitor correctly.

Computer What is a computer?  The computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve and process data.  You can use a computer to type documents, send and browse the Web.  In order to turn on the computer, you must depress the “on/off” button which is found either on the front of the monitor, back of the computer or on the software program.

Why You Should Always Shut Down Your Computer Properly  Using the power button to shut the PC down is not a good idea!  If you use the power button to turn the PC off, you could loose your work!  You should always follow the correct procedure to shut your computer down safely.  There are a few things that you need to do before shutting down your PC.

Checklist:  Make sure you have saved your work!  Click on the Microsoft Office Button to save your documents.Microsoft Office Button  Give your file a meaningful name when you save it, it helps you to find it later.  Check that you have removed any disks, cd or USB data stick.  Make sure that you have closed any programs you have open before shutting down.  If you have forgotten to save any work, you will be reminded to do so when you close the applications.

Correct Procedure for Shutting Down  Click on the start icon.  Click the “Turn Off Computer” button on the back.“Turn Off Computer” button  Click the “Turn Off Computer” icon that appears in the center of your screen.  Your computer should now shut down.  The above procedure is the same for a laptop.  Congratulations! You have learned how to shut down a PC or laptop safely.
