Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs HUMAN BEHAVIOR

Humanists focus upon potentials. Humanist do not believe that human being are pushed and pulled by mechanical forces, either of stimuli and reinforcements (behaviorism) or of unconscious instinctual impulses (psychoanalysis). HUMANIST PSYCHOLOGY

They believe that humans strive for an upper level of capabilities. Humans seek the frontiers of creativity, the highest reaches of consciousness and wisdom. HUMANISTS CONTINUED

MASLOW SAID: All human behavior is motivated by a desire to satisfy needs. In order for a person to keep striving towards the ultimate in his/her growth there has to be a feeling of accomplishment

HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Esteem Self-Actualization Safety Belonging Physiological Basic More complex

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS Food Air Water Sleep Sex (reproduction) Physiological (Physical) Needs

SLEEP

QUICK WRITE: Write about a time when you stayed up all night. Why did you stay up? How did you feel the next day? Sleep QUIZ-- iq-quiz

SAFETY NEEDS Protection Stability Pain Avoidance Routine/Order Freedom from fear Order Safety and Security

Safety: the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. Security: the state of feeling safe, stable, and free from fear or anxiety.

What are some ways you feel safe and secure at home? What are some ways you feel safe and secure at school? When was a time you didn’t feel safe or secure?

LOVE AND BELONGING Affection Acceptance Inclusion Friendship Intimacy Love and Belonging

Having a sense of love and belonging allows us to give and receive affection from another person LOVE AND BELONGING

This is the third level of the hierarchy. Remember once all or most of a person’s physiological and safety needs have been met, one can move on to LOVE and BELONGING.

ESTEEM NEEDS Self-Respect Self-Esteem Respected by Others Achievement Mastery Independence Status Esteem

ESTEEM 1.What is self-esteem? 2.What role does self-esteem play in leading a healthy lifestyle? 3.What role does self-esteem play in decision making? 4.What are some poor decisions someone who lacks self-esteem make? 5.What are some good decisions someone who has high self esteem make?

BASIC NEEDS Physiological/physical, safety and security, love and belonging, esteem are all BASIC needs Maslow says these needs motivate people if they are unmet The longer they go unmet, the more intense the desire to meet the need becomes Ex. Hunger becomes more intense if food need not met

SELF- ACTUALIZATION Achieve full potential Fulfillment Seeking personal growth Have peak experiences

SELF-ACTUALIZATION Closely related with self-esteem. Maslow said that only 1 in 100 people will become self-actualized Cannot be obtained unless all other areas are mastered first. Living up to your full potential This will look different for each person

 Moral  Creative  Spontaneous  Lacks Prejudice  Accepts Facts  Autonomous  Take time for solitude and privacy  Enjoy the journey Self Acceptance Democratic worldview Realistic Problem Centered Have ‘Peak Experiences’ WORDS TO DESCRIBE:

WHAT SELF-ACTUALIZED PEOPLE MIGHT DO:  Pray  Problem Solve  Develop Ideas that would help themselves and others.  Help others  Do the best they can do at what they do.  Enjoy the journey to reaching their goals as much as reaching it.  Enjoy the humor in different situations and laugh at themselves.  Take time to discover themselves and their individual potential.

Involve the desire to grow as an individual and fulfill one’s own potential What could hinder a person not living up to their potential? GROWTH NEEDS

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Esteem Self-Actualization Safety Belonging Physiological People can move up and down the hierarchy When in life do people move down the hierarchy?

Write down one self-actualized person you know of. Can a high school student be self-actualized?
