Evaluation question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? by Mahli Macwana

Mainstream and independent films. Mainstream films and Independent films and very different. Mainstream films have a large budget and will spend millions on advertising. They will star famous Hollywood actors and will have high tech special effects. Mainstream films use broad genres that appeal to a large group of people they do this to increase sales. Independant films have a small budget, they don't advertise their film through tv but they use other cheaper ways of advertising, the actors they hire are usually not very experienced and unknown. Indie films focus on the narrative and acting rather than special effects and extravagant locations. The genre they use is usually very specific and only targets a small target audience.

Mainstream and Indie thrillers Mainstream thrillers are films like shutter island, se7en and the sixth sense. Mainstream thriller films have well recognised actors i.e brad pitt, morgan freeman and leonardo dicaprio. Mainstream distribution companies are very rich and famous a couple of these are Universal and Warner bros. Independent thrillers are films like kidulthood, psycho and adulthood these films were very successful in the box office. Independent distribution companies: Vertigo and independent film co.

My film category After looking at both types of production companies I would say my film is an indie film. This is because my film has a very low budget and all of the actors and have emerging talent and are not hollywood actors. We use limited special effects and focus on the piece being natural and realistic. The location we used is in the woods so is free to use and is completely natural. We have a small crew so the budget is really small.

film distributors for my film After researching independent film production and distribution companies I found one that was perfect for our film and deals with other films similar to our type of film. This company is called “vertigo” and is a london based independent film company. On their website they state “The company’s mission is to create and distribute commercially driven independent cinema and since inception it has produced 28 films and distributed a further 35” i think this is suitable because they have distributed similar films like ours for example “the pusher” sequels, these are indie thriller films that were distributed by vertigo.

comparison to my film A film that the company “vertigo” has produced is called “London to Brighton”. heres the link to the trailer: this film is very similar to our film because first of all they are both thrillers. It is set in brighton and so is ours. The actors are all unexperienced and are not famous. The narrative is not similar but victim is a young girl and the victim in our movie is also a young girl.

Distribution of my film My film is probably not going to be featured in any big mainstream film festival but it might be featured in the “british independent film festival” held in london. Our movie will be shown in small independent cinemas like “duke of york” rather than large mainstream cinemas like “odean”. We would advertise our film on all social networking as its a good free way to advertise to a large amount of people. For advertising we would use mainly pull advertising on social networks and websites as theses are very cheap and can gather a large audience.
