1 Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

2 Mainstream and independent film companies
There are two different film companies. Independent film is a film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly outside of the major film studio system and are usually shown at independent film festivals. independent films are also produced and/or distributed by subsidiaries of major film studios. Independent thriller movies include ‘The Guest’ , ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Predestination’. Mainstream films are films that are distributed to major cinema chains which makes them a wider release e.g. Odeon, Cineworld and uses sophisticated CGI . Mainstream films are typically films that are widely distributed around the world. Mainstream thriller movies include ‘Black swan’ , ‘the butterfly effect’ and ‘identity’ With mainstream films they typically have well known famous actors , have a wide amount of locations ,close down streets to use as a location , have a really big budget in order to make it as good as they can and build big sets. Whereas with a Independent film production they will have a much lower budget which is apparent to the locations and props. The will use actors that are not as well known as a mainstream film.

3 My Film Category From looking at both of the production companies I have come to the decision that mine falls into the independent film category. Due to the fact of it being a low budget film , with new actors that are not well known and famous. We also have a small marketing campaign. We had to improvise with the no cost budget by using places near us and that were free , so we used one of our group members house’s . When using this we made the scenery seem as if our character as living there so we added leftover bottles of alcohol , tobacco pouches and an ashtray with burnt down cigarette buts in it. We also only used 3 locations , we used our group members house to represent two houses , we used the inside of the house ,to represent the main characters house , and we used the outside of the house to represent the other characters house, when editing we made it so that they looked like two different houses.

4 Which film company for my film ?
I have done some research in to what companies would suit my film the best , I searched for independent movie companies , and the best one that I found was a company called ‘independent’ , this is a UK distribution company , that have over 20 years experience in the business. As it is a UK based films distribution company and supports films with a lower cost budget. Films that this company have distributed include ‘The Invisible War’ , ‘Life just is’ , ‘Hell and Back again’ and ‘KIMJONGILIA’.

5 Distributed to… Because it is an independent movie , it will not be shown in mainstream cinemas and premieres, an it will not also be shown around the world , It is more likely for my independent movie to be shown at local festivals like ‘LIFF’ London Independent film festival , and a festival called ‘thrillerchiller’’ these would be suitable as my film is a thriller based film with scenes of death etc . An award nomination for my film could be held at the ‘IPPY’ awards , independent movie awards You could say that are film could be similar to the mainstream film called ‘Taken’ , this is because the main character in taken has had a family member ‘taken’ an all he knows is that she (his daughter) could have been killed or kidnapped. This is similar to our film because he thinks his family have been taken and killed , but they are actually alive , and have been kidnapped. When a mainstream film in distributed and shown it makes more money and gets more views , causing the actors and actresses in the film to get more recognition. But when and independent film distributed and shown, it doesn't get as much recognition and doesn't make nearly half as much money as a mainstream film does.

6 Promotion To promote my film I think that the best thing to promote it would be to put it on social networking sites , this is because our age range is 16 + and a lot of teenagers up from that age use social networking sites like Facebook , Instagram , twitter etc. by promoting it on social networking sites , it will make the people on the social networking sites see it , and then they would hopefully want to go see it at a festival or a independent cinema. To promote my film we are more likely to be using pull advertising , this is because it is cheaper and easier to actually do . We will use the word of mouth method and We could put our opening title sequence/ trailer on to social networking sites , hoping that it will appeal to our target audience , and then hope for it to get shared around . Also we could use strategic placement of a product in a store such as posters, flyers and brochures. This will help pull the audience in and convince them to want to watch it.
