Question 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? DISORIENTED Beth Bodimeade

Mainstream & Independent A main difference between the two is the amount of money spent, the budget given to produce the film is the reason behind the other differences such as: The starring actors- mainstream films will have well known, big time actors. Whereas low budget independent films will use newer, emerging talent. For example, a mainstream film such as Se7en, stars both Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. The genre and content- mainstream films will use content which will attract to a wide audience, therefore being shown worldwide. Independent films often have content more attracted to a niche audience. Examples of this sort are low budget European films, such as. The special effects used- In mainstream films such as, the special effects used are expensive, done well and used often, this allows the film to have unrealistic or extreme narrative, which can help attract a wider audience because the film will be more exciting. Independent films cannot rely on these special effects and so have the main focus on the characters and narrative. Marketing campaign- Mainstream films will have a high profile marketing campaign, they will show their trailers on TV, have billboards and posters put up around the world, and participate in viral campaigns to get the name of the film known. Independent film marketing will reflect the low budget, the film will have little press, mention through niche media texts and shown before released at small festivals and award nights. The producing companies for mainstream films will be well known, for example Paramount have produced Thriller films such as Shutter Island and The Stepford Wives. Independent films will be produced by smaller non-mainstream companies such as Rook Films, a British company who have distributed the film Kill List. The films distributed by mainstream companies will be shown at much bigger cinema chains like Odeon, at multiplexes and at larger festivals. These films will also be shown for a longer time period. Independent films will be shown at independent cinemas, like The Duke Of York Cinema which is part of the Picture House chain.

Our film Disoriented would fall into the category of mainstream film. This is because the content of the film would attract to a wide audience as it has many different themes. These include crime, psychosis, stalker, but in keeping with a different theme ‘high school’ which will attract an audience of the high school age. Because it is a mainstream film it would be distributed by a big film company such as Paramount or Universal. This company would spend a lot more money on the production, actors and marketing of the film than an independent film distribution company would. I think a suitable distribution company for our film Disoriented would be Paramount because they have distributed the film Shutter Island, which was the main inspiration for our narrative and is similar to ours in both characters and narrative. Both films are a Thriller hybrid, Psychosis Thriller and include a character which is in denial of the truth of their actions. With stars such as Leonardo Di Caprio and special effects to help create the extreme weather and location, Shutter Island is a great example of a mainstream film. The box office figures for Shutter Island were £2,250,178 (UK) and $41,062,440 (USA) in the opening weekend. With a budget of $80,000,000 the companies distributing this made a gross income of $294,804,195. DISORIENTED AS MAINSTREAM

Distribution of Disoriented Because our film would be distributed by a mainstream company, it would have more money spent on its marketing and shows of the film itself. This meaning it would be shown at the bigger, more successful cinema chains such as Cineworld. Like all mainstream, and some independent films before the screenings in cinemas the film would have a premiere show, acting as the first screening, an extravagant event attracting much media attention, and audience as starring actors, and directors will be present. As well as the movie premiere the film might be shown at film festivals, this also acts as a marketing plan as it will spread peoples knowledge of the film. From these events will come ratings, shown in magazines, newspapers and online. With all marketing and screenings backed by the mainstream distribution companies money- I think the box office figures should around £130,000,000 -somewhere in between the gross total income of The Stepford Wives ($102,001,626= £64,954,635.44) and Shutter Island ($294,804,195= £187,731,311.38).

The target audience for my film will have an interest in Thriller films which they could potentially find disturbing, but interesting, for example films such as The Silence of the Lambs. Other films they might also enjoy would be Shutter Island as narratively it is similar. Because our film has a few themes running through, such as ‘stalker’ and ‘obsession’ I think the audience would also enjoy the film Fatal Attraction. I think this complex narrative could mean a wider audience as the individual themes might attract people to watch it. I think my Thriller film would attract more to the female audience because our main character is female and so again the audience will feel more connection between them and the character. But I do not think that means male audience will not enjoy it as much as the narrative is neither ‘girly’ or focused too much on Niamh’s ‘girlish emotions’. The target audience for my film would be age group of around 15-30, this is because the main character is of similar age meaning the audience will find it easier to relate with her emotions and actions. Elements of the film could attract an older audience though, for example the actor for the ‘stalker’ psychiatrist will be older, and as it is a mainstream film should be a good, well known actor, one which the older audience might watch the film just to see them. Thriller films with similar narrative and themes to mine are Shutter Island and Fatal Attraction. These two films will have had reviews and ratings in magazines and newspapers which would more have attracted the older audience. Also on the radio and TV would have been mention of Shutter Island. Because Fatal Attraction is an older film (1987) there wont have been online internet marketing, but for Shutter Island this is where the younger audience would be much more likely to find out about the film. I would give my film a 4 star rating, this is because I think it will be very successful due to its exciting narrative which will leave the audience on the edge of their seat throughout. For the age rating I would give my film a 15. Typically Thriller films will be rated 15 or 18 due to the violent or sexually explicit scenes. The reason I would give my film a 15 is because although there are scenes of violence, they are not particularly explicit, sadistic or glorified. There is also swearing, but the strongest is only used when it is justified by content of the film.

“This is Amelia Harwood. She is 17 years old and lives in with her family in South London. Her clothing conforms to the clothing styles of those of the same age around her. She buys her clothing from shops such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters and also the more individual clothing lines found in South London. On the weekend she enjoys going out with her friends around London. She enjoys a wide range of film genres, including Horror/Thriller, Action, Comedy and Romance. Her favourite films include Pulp Fiction, Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Lucky Number Slevin. She enjoys watching romantic films at sleepovers with her friends, but prefers watching Horror and Thriller films at the cinema so she can enjoy the full experience on the big screen. On TV her favourite programs include Desperate Housewives, Misfits and Black Mirror. She also enjoys watching 90210, Family Guy, Big Brother and Peep Show. The main channels she watches are E4 and Channel 4, and she goes online to 4oD to watch episodes she has missed. The music Amelia listens to also varies widely, her favourite genre is hip-hop but depending on her mood she could be listening to any of the wide range of genres she enjoys. These genres include rap, r ‘n’ b, certain rock bands, reggae, drum ‘n’ bass, and current pop chart music. She listens to radio channels like Kiss FM and Heart FM for the chart hits, but always has her iPod on her, which holds all the music she enjoys as she frequently updates it. I think our film would appeal to Amelia and other girls like her as she isn’t a typical girly girl, but does sometimes enjoy girly things, this would mean she would have an interest in both the thrilling murder and stalker themes, as well as the romantic aspect between the main character Niamh and the boy from her college, Tom. As it also has an obviously Thriller narrative this might attract her to watch it at the cinema, as she prefers to see films which induce great tension and excitement.

Marketing Tools Because my main target audience is of age 15-30 it is most likely that they will find out about my film will be over the internet. This kind f marketing is called Pull advertising and includes social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Websites and forums focused on the film will also be a common way in which this age group will learn about the film. Magazines such as NME, and EMPIRE might also be a way in which the audience will read reviews and ratings on the film. Push advertising used for my film would be the posters and billboards put up around the world, advertising the starring actors, the titles including the name of the film and the producers and directors. There will also be many TV advertisements, again showing the titles but also showing fast, exciting clips of the film without giving away only enough information on narrative and characters to make the audience want to go and see it. Event such as TV interviews with the main cast will be shown after the film has been shown in cinemas. These will help the audience feel more of a personal connection to the actors and the characters they play. Here is a link to a YouTube video of an interview with Leonardo Di Caprio, on Shutter Island. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfruSKhjaXkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfruSKhjaXk Media coverage of the films premiere and participant in film award festivals, as well as the actual events will help attract audience attention.

Content Of Marketing Goods One of the main selling points of Disoriented are the starring actors. Acting Niamh is Jennifer Lawrence, she is a newly high rated actress who has recently played leading roles in other Thriller films such as House at the End of the Street and Winters Bone. Because of her recent success and I think this will help both the audience turnout but also the media coverage we receive as critics will be interested as to how far her success will go. The psychiatrist ‘stalker’ will be acted by Bruce Willis, renowned for both his acting and appearance in Thriller films. He has leaded roles in Thriller films such as Sixth Sense, Die Hard and Sin City. I think Bruce Willis’ popularity as an actor will also help the marketing campaign and overall film viewings. Another main selling point is the director of the film; Martin Scorsese, the director of other very successful Thriller films such as Shutter Island and The Departed. The ‘film fanatics’ in our audience will be more up to date with specific directors and theirs films, than the wider audience who will have more of an interest in the starring actors. Because of this and the media coverage for Scorsese I think having him as the director will be effective in selling my film. ‘From the director of Shutter Island and Taxi Driver; starring The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence, and Bruce Willis comes Disoriented- it will leave you breathless’ – EMPIRE Magazine

Audience Feedback To get feedback on our opening title sequence I addressed our target audience of the age group 15-30. I showed a number of people in this age group and received the following feedback: GENRE:  The soundtrack was a good choice as it gave the whole feature a much more Thriller feel to it. The way it switches in time with the present and past tense frames also works well because it helps show the time difference.  Having no dialogue keeps the audience from working out information about the characters and keeping the characters identities hidden, which is very typical of Thriller. MISE-EN-SCENE:  The mobile made a connection between the girl character and the man at the end and also suggested the stalker narrative.  The locations were well chosen; the woods is a very suitable place for a murder as it is secluded. The college made it obvious as to the age of the girl. CINEMATOGPRAPHY:  Black and white colouring makes the past tense scenes sinister and more intense.  The quick cuts and flashes between the shots also increases the intensity.  The graphic matches helped link the scenes together. From this feedback I feel that we have made an intense and exciting feature which successfully effects our chosen target audience.
