Curriculum Middle School Math in the Issaquah School District uses Connected Mathematics Program 3 (CMP3) This course content aligns with the Common Core standards. Students learn through:  Engaging problems.  Individually, group, and whole class problem solving.  In-class and homework exercises.  Online activities and assignments.  iPads (coming in October!)

Math XL Addtionally, students will do individual online Math assignments with MathXL for students:  Students work at their own pace.

Units You will receive a parent letter via with parent. Links will be available on the Class Connect Website.  Shapes and Designs (SD)  Accentuate the Negative (AN)  Stretching and Shrinking (SS)  Comparing and Scaling (CS)  Moving Straight Ahead (MSA)  What Do You Expect (WDYE)  Filling and Wrapping (FW)  Samples and Populations (SP)

Grading Policies Tests and Quizzes – 65% of Grade  Most of the 8 main units have mid-unit quizzes and 1 Unit Test.  Unit Test Retakes are available for most units under the following conditions: -The student score will be the average of their original and retake unit test scores. The retakes will be taken during Math Lab on days scheduled by the teacher. -To be eligible to take the retake, students must present a signed (will be provided) form stating they reviewed their original test with an adult.  There are no quiz retakes.

Grading Policies, cont’d Classwork, and Homework 35% of Grade  Homework assignments every night M-F (Friday also!)  Homework completed in pencil in spiral notebook or the complete worksheet (WS).  Students should keep their binders and notes well organized for each unit.  Student participation, teamwork and classwork are the daily expectation.  Frequent check ups through: Homework Quizzes, Exit tickets, Partner Quizzes, etc.

New Homework Correcting Procedure: Homework will be self-graded each night online with a red pen Answers will be posted on our Class Connect Website. (If for some reason they are not posted, you should be able to find them on Mr. Ciraulo’s site or Mrs. Armstrong’s site.) Students will get immediate feedback, then come prepared to class with questions. If you do not have internet access at home: school library, public library. The school can provide a free computer and access to inexpensive internet.

5 points: All problems are neatly completed with work shown in pencil and corrected with a pen 3 points: All problems are neatly completed with work shown in pencil, but NOT corrected 0 points: Incomplete Remember: 3 late passes per trimester Problems I struggled with were… HWRS All problems are neatly completed with work shown in pencil, but NOT corrected 3 points All problems are neatly completed with work shown in pencil and corrected with a pen 5 points Incomplete 0 Points

Partner quizzes: 1-2 per unit. Allow students to work together over a 2-day period. Quizzes are turned in as a group after Day 1. Errors are identified, but not corrected. Day 2 is for clarifying and correcting. Exit tickets: 1-2 each unit. Short problems that give a quick check on understanding of a concept. Homework Record Sheet (HWRS): Student check; teacher re-check of daily hw assignments.

Absent Work Policy  It is the student’s responsibility to “get caught up” after an absence.  Check our class connect website or call a classmate for missed assignments.  Students will have one day for each excused absence to make up daily work. Work will not be accepted later than that given time without a late pass.

Late Work Policy Homework is to be turned in on time. Students will receive 3 “late-work” passes each trimester. Each pass can be attached to one late assignment from the current unit, and will then be accepted for full credit. Once the passes are used during the trimester, no late work will be accepted.

Communication  Class Connect website  Family Access  Homework Record Sheet (HWRS)  Distribution List (Please keep your addresses updated on Family Access.)  Progress Reports

Homework Help  General After School Support:  Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in MMS Library  Math Lab: Thurs  Staffed by a rotating Maywood Math Teacher  2:10pm – 3:10pm in Room 119 (Mrs. Buck’s rm)  You can ride the Activity Bus home  With Mrs. Toborg:  Before or after school by appointment

Helping from Home  Support good study and organizational skills:  Review hw / HWRS  Review planner  Review class notes in math spiral  Encourage organization  If a student is stuck on a homework problem, encourage him/her to: Review the day’s PowerPoint lesson plan posted on the Website. Go to the text website for more resources.
