What Will We Talk About This Evening?  The Curriculum  ELA  Science Social Studies Math Assignments Thursday Folders Data Collection Grades/ Grading Classroom Rules Classroom Procedures

ELA  ReadyGEN 2016 Pearson  This includes 4 units with 2 modules per unit:  Each unit has a science or social studies theme  Each module has a performance based assessment at the end  This program is balanced with writing that is linked directly with the days reading activity.  “Let’s write like the author.”

Science This year the students will be studying four different hands on units. These units include: ① Earth Materials ② Microworlds ③ Processes of Investigation ④ Solar Systems

Science (cont.) There will be two major projects from the units of Processes of Investigations and Solar Systems. o These projects are to be completed outside of the classroom. We strongly encourage the projects to be completed by the students to showcase what they learned.

Social Studies We use the Houghton-Mifflin series for S.S. There will be five units the students will be covering this year: ① Our Land and First People ② Exploration and Settlement ③ The English Colonies ④ The American Revolutions ⑤ The New Nation

Social Studies For quizzes the students will be able to use their textbooks. This will help them utilize the skills of reading and understanding non-fiction text. For tests, students will not be able to use their textbooks. This will help them prepare for the testing style, and study strategies in future grades. Study guides will be provided.

Math School District #308 utilizes the My Math program. The program has been implemented district wide Pre-K through High School and includes learning opportunities for enrichment and reteaching. My Math relies on a variety of ways to teach, practice, and review the concepts including:  Direct instruction  Partner work  Games  Small group activities

Math (cont.) The purpose of the My Math curriculum is to allow students to explore key mathematical concepts and ideas through an in-depth study of all the content strands of mathematics. This also includes real world math applications.

Math Students will be given access to My Math online resources using the information provided on your handout. Please contact me if you experience any problems with your login.

Assignments Assignments are posted in the classroom and each student is responsible for writing it in their assignment notebooks. Please sign your child’s assignment notebook daily if you feel it is best practice for him/her. If your child informs you they have no homework, that is incorrect. They should study math facts for accuracy and fluency, and read for at least 20 minutes!

Assignments (cont.)  Homework is not designed to overwhelm and consume your child’s night. It is designed to last approximately 40 minutes per day.  Please remember it also depends on your child’s personal work pace.  Some days the time may be more due to projects, studying for tests, etc.

Assignments (cont.) It is the child's responsibility to bring home the necessary materials to complete their homework assignments.

Thursday Folders On Thursday building and community notes are sent home.

Friday Folders & Data Binders Friday folders are designed to communicate student work progress with you. Please be aware that not all students work is graded. –Some are marked to check for completion. Classroom newsletter will be in Friday Folder if you have requested a hardcopy. Data Binders will be coming home more frequently and will have both graded and non-graded work showcased.

Grades Grades will be based on the following scale… The scales will always be posted in the classroom and the students have already been made aware of them. Please remember this is the first year your child will get letter grades. Think about as a family how you want to discuss and support your child in this new stage of becoming an upper elementary student. Celebrate the grades with your child! If a B was earned by your child’s best effort, celebrate!!
