John Christoph Blucher Ehringhaus. By: Desionna Lewis

John Ehringhaus.(; John Christoph B. Ehringhaus was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on February 5 th, He was the son of Eskine and Catherine Ehringhaus. As a child, he attended Elizabeth City public schools. He graduated from Atlantic Collegiate Institute in Ehringhaus entered UNC the same year; he began his college education before he was 16. He graduated a year early from UNC with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then he entered the UNC law school. While in law school, John taught classes at the University. Ehringhaus graduated in 1903 with a law degree, and he entered the bar the same year.

The Beginning of John’s Career. John moved back to his hometown and began to practice law. In 1904, the Pasquotank County Democratic Convention nominated Ehringhaus for the State House of Representatives. He won this election and served two terms in the General Assembly. Ehringhaus was elected solicitor of the first judicial district at the age of 28. He served the maximum of 3 terms and 12 years in the position.

John’s Family. In 1912, John married Matilda Bradford Haughton. They had 3 children, John C. B. Ehringhaus Jr., and the twins, Haughton and Matilda Ehringhaus, John and Matilda had high hopes for.

John’s Career. From 1911 to 1923 he worked as a solicitor. In the contentious 1928 Presidential Campaign between Herbert C. Hoover and Alfred E. Smith, Ehringhaus, unlike some prominent state democrats, he remained loyal to the party and worked hard for Smith in the state. He also vigorously supported Oliver M. Gardner in his bid for governor that year. Gardner’s endorsement of Ehringhaus for governor in 1932 reinforced his connection with the “Shelby Dynasty”, Gardner’s political organization named for Gardner’s hometown.

John’s Career Cont.(: Ehringhaus intended to maintain the conservative, predecessor policies. His opponent, the incumbent lieutenant governor Richard T. Fountain of Edgecombe County, reflected the more typical liberal policies of the agrarian east that opposed the business interests of the conservatives in the piedmont. Eastern politicians generally favored taxes on corporations to ease the tax burden on the small farm owners. The Ehringhaus-Fountain duel also reflected a personal power struggle of insurgents against the Gardner organization.

JOHN CHRISTOPH.(: In September 1933, Ehringhaus closed the tobacco markets and lobbied officials in Washington for higher prices for the commodity. He offered his rhetorical support to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s new deal programs but followed his own cautious path. He declined to provide state matching funds to the Emergency Relief Administration, and delayed implementation of the Social Security Act. His popularity sank after 1935 and he declared that he had had a “bellyful” of public office.
