2  Popular vote- vote of the citizens of a country  Presidents are not elected by popular vote (your vote does not count directly for the president)  Elector- one of the people chosen from each state and the District of Columbia who formally select the president and vice president  The number of electors matches the number of Congress members in each state

3  Electoral college- group of electors from around the country  Electoral votes- votes cast by electors for the president and vice president

4  Before becoming a presidential candidate, individuals must win their party’s nomination  This happens at their political party’s convention  Platform- statement of a party’s views and policies on important issues

5  Vice presidential candidates are usually chosen for their ability to win votes  The presidential candidate has the biggest say in deciding who will be the vice presidential candidate
