2 John Adams was born in the village of Braintree(Quincy), Massachusetts in 1735. He was the son of militia lieutenant, John Adams Sr. and Susanna Boylston. He attended Harvard University and graduated in 1755. After college he taught school for a few years in Worcester. In 1758 he was admitted to the bar and served as a lawyer. On October 25, 1764 John married Abigail Smith. Together, they had 5 children. His

4 John Adams was a supporter of the Federalist Party. John Adams believed in a representative government. Adams served as a diplomat in Europe and helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris.

5 The XYZ Affair was a political problem from 1797-1798. XYZ is named for three French diplomats, whose names were found in documents released by John Adams. American diplomats were sent to France to discuss problems that could have possibly broken out into war. After failure, the Quasi- War, which was an undeclared naval war, began. All of this happened while John Adams was serving his term in office. He delivered the XYZ Affair Speech that summarized what was happening and said that congress needed to fund a navy. VS

6 The Alien and Sedition were four bills that were passed in 1798 by the Federalist Party. The acts were signed in the aftermath of the French Revolution and during the Quasi War. The acts were signed into law by President John Adams in 1798. The acts were actually four separate acts, The Naturalization Act, The Alien Act, The Alien Enemies Act, and The Sedition Act.

7 John Adams was the 1 st Vice President of the United States. He served under the head of President George Washington. After Washington left office after 2 terms, John was elected president. John served his term of president from March 4, 1797 to March 4, 1801. His vice president was Thomas Jefferson. Adams followed in Washington’s footsteps and was said to be the most independent minded president.

8 John Adams son, John Quincy Adams, became the 6 th president 16 months before John passed away. He was the only president before George W. Bush to have a son hold office. John died on the 50 th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. John was the longest living president at 90 years 247 days, for 175 years until Ronald Regan broke the record in 2001.
