Progressive Form Each of the six tenses has a progressive form that expresses a continuing action. You make the progressive form by using the appropriate tense of to be with the present participle of the main verb. Ex. They are traveling. (present progressive) They were traveling. (past progressive) They will be traveling. (future progressive) They have been traveling. (present perfect progressive) They had been traveling. (past perfect progressive) They will have been traveling. (future perfect progressive)

Emphatic Form The present and past tense have additional forms, called emphatic forms, that add special force, or emphasis, to the verb. You make the emphatic form by using do, does, or did with the base form of the verb. Ex. I do hope the train is on time. (present emphatic) Tom does have a plane to catch. (present emphatic) He did miss his plane the last time because of a late train. (past emphatic)
