SSI (Student Success Initiative) The Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements apply to enrolled grades 5 and 8 students who take the STAAR reading and mathematics tests at grades 5 and 8. It was enacted by the 76 th Texas Legislature in 1999 and modified by the 81 st Texas Legislature in As specified by these requirements, a student may advance to the next grade level only by passing these tests or by unanimous decision of his or her grade placement committee that the student is likely to perform at grade level after additional instruction. The goal of the SSI is to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and mathematics. This effort depends greatly on schools, parents, and community members working in partnership to meet individual student needs.

5 th grade Math SSI According to TEA, the primary focal areas for 5 th grade Math are: Problem solving using all four operations with positive rational numbers – (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals) Determining and generating formulas and solutions to expressions Extending measurement to area and volume We cover a number of other areas, as well, including comparing and rounding decimals, estimating, prime and composite numbers, coordinate plane, collecting, organizing, and interpreting data, and personal finance

5 th grade Math (cont.) Skills practice will now be coming home weekly on Monday and will be due on Thursday. There will be assignments/homework 3-4 nights a week. Almost always 10 problems or less. Students receive assignment sheets weekly so that they know what is expected for the week. In Math, we take Unit tests at the conclusion of each Unit. We typically have 2 – 3 Unit tests each 6 week period.
