COMN 3111 3.0 Organizational Communication Lecture 1a WELCOME!

WE STUDY ORGANIZATIONS BECAUSE WE SPEND MOST OF OUR LIVES IN THEM. ORGANIZATIONS ARE THE PRODUCTS OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION AND ONCE CREATED, THEY SHAPE HOW WE TALK AND WITH WHOM WE TALK. KNOWING HOW THEY WORK AND HOW WE CAN WORK WITHIN THEM IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SUCCESSFUL LIFE.

WE WILL BEGIN WITH A SHORT REVIEW OF A VERY BASIC MODEL OF IP COMMUNICATION FOCUS ON THE TYPE AND FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION IN ORGANIZATIONS WHAT FUNCTIONS DOES COMMUNICATION – OF WHATEVER TYPE – SERVE IN ORGANIZING? REVIEW HOW COMMUNICATION TYPES CHANGE AS ORGANIZATIONS GROW – FROM PURELY FACE-TO-FACE TALK – MUTUAL ADJUSTMENT – TO AN EMPHASIS ON WRITTEN DOCUMENTS – TEXT ON PAGE AND NOW TEXT ON SCREEN. ALSO WE WILL KEEP COMING BACK TO THE PROBLEM OF COMMUNICATION OVERLOAD – TOO MUCH INFORMATION -AND HOW ORGANIZATIONS DEAL WITH THIS. HOW THEY CHANGE.
