Southern Colonies Virginia Maryland North Carolina South Carolina Georgia

Virginia 1607, Jamestown begun by members of the Virginia Co. after years of struggle, begin to make profits tobacco use of slave labor House of Burgesses

Maryland 1632, Sir George Calvert (Lord Baltimore), was given a charter he was Catholic—not legal in England at the time wanted a place where Catholics could worship in peace set up the Acts of Toleration tolerant to all Christians but, death penalty to Jews and Atheists that “denied the divinity of Jesus”

prospered with growing tobacco used white indentured servants for long time (years of work for cost of transport to N.A.) late 17th c. African slaves used more

Carolina 1670, Sugar planters from the West Indies began to move to the mainland Brought with them African slaves Brought slave codes that had been adopted on the islands Sugar required lots of labor and produced big returns Eventually, rice would be grown and be a big export

Colonists from the West Indies coincided with the formal colony set up by Charles II. Rich family members that were deprived of land inheritance moved to Carolina, giving it a strong aristocratic influence French protestant refugees moved there for religious toleration

North Carolina splits away Many in this area had moved away from the wealthy, and powerful group of Virginia planters. Had earned a reputation of being “irreligious and hospitable to pirates” Became an island in the middle of perceived snobbishness of Virginia and South Carolina 1712, officially separated shared distinction of being most independent and democratic of colonies with Rhode Island.

Georgia 1732, King George II, gave the southern part of S.C. to General James Oglethorpe Georgia was provided as an option to prison for English in debt (a jail able offense—jails were full) 1733, 120 settlers built town of Savannah

Early rules were very strict No rum allowed Farms limited to 500 acres Slavery outlawed Growth was very slow until the rules were relaxed

Buffer against Spanish in FL 1739, Oglethorpe with help of Creek tribe forced Spanish back past the Florida border. Received financial backing from England that others did not

Religious toleration offered to all Christians but Catholics
