The “Catholic Safe Haven” Allowed freedom of worship to Trinitarian Christians But…… were sentenced to death if divinity of Jesus was denied

Aristocrats made the decisions in the government Owned property and AT LEAST 20 slaves Tobacco and indentured servants Inspection Acts created: established public warehouses with official inspectors; required planters to transport every hogshead of tobacco in the colony to a warehouse for inspection. Maryland Act of Toleration: provided protection to Catholics from the growing majority of Protestants

1739 slave rebellion in South Carolina Largest colonial slave revolt led by Jemmy (“Cato”) About one hundred fugitive slaves killed twenty whites Killed when captured or sold into the West Indies Sparked other slave revolts over the next few years Why the rebellion? 1. malaria epidemic in Charlestown 2. passage of the Security Act in SC- required all white men to carry firearms to church on Sunday 3. Harvest time

Founded by James Oglethorpe as a military colony Used as a buffer/protection from the Spaniards and raids Prohibited slavery and debtors prisons for awhile Was one of the slowest growing colonies due to harsh climate, anti- slavery laws and Spanish raids
