11. Stono Rebellion Why the rebellion? Also known as Cato’s Rebellion
1739 slave rebellion in South Carolina
Largest colonial slave revolt led by Jemmy (“Cato”)
About one hundred fugitive slaves killed twenty whites
Killed when captured or sold into the West Indies
Sparked other slave revolts over the next few years
Why the rebellion?
1. malaria epidemic in Charlestown
2. passage of the Security Act in SC- required all white men to carry firearms to church on Sunday

12. Georgia… Last colony founded in 1733
Founded by James Oglethorpe as a military colony
Used as a buffer/protection from the Spaniards and raids
Prohibited slavery and debtors prisons for awhile
Was one of the slowest growing colonies due to harsh climate, anti- slavery laws and Spanish raids
