4 This isn’t the Movie I Know…
John Smith would arrive in Jamestown and turned it into a hard working colony with the Help of Native Americans As Native Americans stopped trading food with settlers, the starving times left Jamestown with 60 Settlers Tobacco, created by John Rolfe, would transform Jamestown, but leave colonists seeking a share of the profits As Jamestown grew, John Rolfe would marry Pocahontas to improve relationships with the Powhatan tribe As Native Americans lost more land, the Powhatan tribe would kill 100’s of Jamestown settlers

5 False teeth and Indentures
Large Plantations begin to form as the Headright System rewarded people who settled in America Those who could not afford their way to America came as Indentured Servants hoping to earn their way to land ownership As Indentured Servants became Scarce African Slavery began to increase in Virginia

6 Shake’n Bacon Former Indentured Servants begin to resent Wealthy Landowners and taxes and demanded land from Native Americans Nathanial Bacon tried to urge William Berkley to approve a war against Native Americans for land and plantations Bacon’s Rebellion led to a revolt on Jamestown but also led to the death’s of Bacon and his Followers The House of Burgesses would pass laws to help end Tyranny and plant the seeds of independence

7 A not so Merry Land King Charles I issues a charter to Lord Baltimore to make Maryland a colony of Catholic Refuge Baltimore became profitable as they began to raise corn, cattle, hogs and tobacco As protestants and Catholics began to clash in Maryland, Lord Baltimore Passed the Toleration Act of 1649 The toleration would slow, but not stop, the violence

8 Sweet Carolina The Carolinas are created and become a place of religious freedom The use of slaves, including Native Americans, to farm land leads to wars against the Native Americans When the owners of Carolina would not send help to fight the Spanish, Carolina would become a Royal Colony The colony would be divided into North and South Carolina and would be ruled by governors

9 Georgia on my Mind Georgia is formed by James Oglethorpe and becomes a refuge for debtors and a military outpost against Florida After James Oglethorpe set strict rules for the colony including the outlawing of Plantations and slavery The king of England made it a Royal Colony and Rice Plantations and Slavery increased

10 Code of Conduct The Southern Economy began to focus on Cash Crops like Tobacco, Indigo, and Rice Slavery, often times brutal slavery, began to become more common Slave Olaudah Equiano would speak out against the brutal condition as slave codes would be passed to restrict slave rights and prevent revolts
