Edgar Allan Poe Bio Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to an already blossoming family. With one brother and one sister, he was the middle child in his family. In 1810, his father died, and his mother followed in the next year. In 1815, he and his foster family traveled to England, where he stayed for five years. In 1820, upon return, he enrolled in the University of Virginia. After a while, he left school and enlisted into the Army. While in the Army, he wrote poetry sporadically. One of his poems went into the Baltimore North American in In the same year, he paid for his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, to be published. Two years later, in 1829, his foster mother died. During 1831, he moved to Baltimore with his aunt and cousin Virginia. He soon proposed to Virginia and they married, he was 21 and was she 13. His brother also lived with them but died of tuberculosis. In 1836, Virginia and he got married, then moved to New York. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, Poe’s only completed novel, was published in The Murders In The Rouge Morgue, the first detective novel, was published in In 1847, Virginia passed away. Poe started drinking more often and acted strange. He became engaged to his high school sweetheart one year later.

In 1849 he collapsed in the street and was admitted into the nearest hospital, the Washington College hospital. He soon died, on October 7. He was buried in Old Westminster Burial Ground, in an simple grave. His parents and families names are engraved on his tombstone along with the line, ‘Quoth the Raven, Nevermore’. During 1875, his remains were moved to the Poe Memorial Grave during an dedication ceremony.

My Theory on Poes Death I believe his death came from excessive drinking. Many people have died from drinking, and I personally know two who have. Poe had a reason to drink, as his first wife died. Drinking ruins the liver, and can cause death. He behaved in a bizarre manner before his death, most likely from being drunk. This information makes him passing away from drinking very believable.

My Favorite Poem by Edgar Allan Poe Annabel Lee is one of Poes poems. It is about a woman and a man so deeply in love that the angels are jealous. They make a chilled wind go to Annabel, which makes her sick. As a few days pass, she gets more sick. A few days after getting sick, she passes away. Her royal family comes to get her for her funeral. She gets put in a sepulcher, and gets laid to rest next to the sea. Every night, her husband sleeps with her in her tomb, although she is dead. Every night he feels her eyes are watching her, in form of stars. In this poem, Poe uses a metaphor that stars are Annabel’s eyes.

My Favorite Poem Cont. Poe uses a lot of suspense, repeating words and foreshadowing with saying how envious the angels were of Annabel and his relationship. He says in a offhand manner that he sleeps with her corpse every night.

Conclusion Poe is the modern day horror father because he wrote the first horror stories, about death, revenge and the likes. I believe that he died from drinking and one of my friends have died from alcoholism. Other than that, I don’t have any other connections with him. I enjoy his stories, due to how different they are from the world I grew up and live in. They aren’t terribly scary, but more spooky in a way, so I’m not scared to read them. They talk about heartache and death, and by the way he writes, you can feel what he is talking about instead of only reading it.
