Presentation transcript:

The Scientific Method A Scientific Way of Problem Solving

What is the scientific method?  A series of steps that scientists use to logically answer science related questions.

Step 1- Identify the Problem  Recognize the problem and state it as a question.

 A rattlesnake will strike its’ prey and let it get away.  The rattlesnake is able to then track its’ prey and find it sometimes many meters away!

Step 2- Gather Info. on the Problem  Research  Observation  Discover what is already known about the problem.

 Research information about how snakes hunt.  Speak with a zoologist that is an expert on rattlesnakes.

Step 3- State a Hypothesis  A hypothesis is a suggested solution (“educated guess”) as to why something happens.  A hypothesis is usually made after careful research.

 Develop a well researched answer to your question in step 1  Be prepared to support your answer with the data you gathered

Our Hypothesis  We know that snakes can detect invisible light which allows them to track heat.  Snakes use their tongue to smell.  Our hypothesis is that snakes can smell and track their own venom.

Step 4- Test the Hypothesis  A hypothesis is tested by conducting an experiment.  A variable is something that changes in an experiment. 1. Independent Variable- the factor that is manipulated or changed by the scientist.

2. Dependent Variable- the part of the experiment that is effected by the independent variable. *** Never test more then one variable at a time because it will be difficult to tell which one affected the outcome.

 Test whether the venom forms an invisible trail that the snake follows.

Control Group  Part of the experiment that does not receive the independent variable; used for comparison.

Experimental Group  The part of an experiment that receives the independent variable and is then compared to the control group.

 We place a rattlesnake in an enclosed area with some mice.  We are looking to see if the snake is able to kill and track only the mouse it has bitten.

Step 5- Record and Analyze Data  Repeat experiment numerous times, same way.  Accurately record all data and observations.  Organize data. (graphs & data tables)

Step 6- State a Conclusion  Explain data and findings  State whether or not your findings support your hypothesis.
