1 THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

2 1. STATE THE PROBLEM BEGIN WITH A SOLID PROBLEM OR QUESTION
CHOOSE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE MEASURED

3 2. RESEARCH THE PROBLEM CONSULT A WIDE VARIETY OF REPUTABLE RESOURCES ON THE TOPIC TAKE NOTES AND STUDY THE EXISTING DATA

4 3. FORM A HYPOTHESIS MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS ABOUT YOUR SOLUTION OR ANSWER TURN THE HYPOTHESIS INTO A STATEMENT THAT YOU THINK SOLVES THE PROBLEM If ……then ……because……

5 4. WRITE DOWN THE PROCEDURES FOR THE EXPERIMENT
LIST THE PROCEDURES THAT TEST YOUR HYPOTHESIS

6 5. PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT
GATHER MATERIALS AND FOLLOW WRITTEN PROCEDURES NOTE ANY STEPS THAT VARY FROM YOUR WRITTEN PROCEDURES **MAKE SURE YOU PERFORM A VALID EXPERIMENT**

7 6. OBSERVE AND RECORD THE RESULTS
OBSERVE THE EXPERIMENT AND THE CHANGES THAT OCCUR -quantitative data is information collected as numbers -qualitative data is information collected as descriptions of what our senses detect RECORD THE DATA ACCURATELY AND HONESTLY

8 7. INTERPRET THE DATA ANALYZE THE RECORDED FINDINGS
ORGANIZE THE RECORDED DATA INTO A CHART, GRAPH, OR TABLE

9 8. STATE THE CONCLUSION SUMMARIZE YOUR FINDINGS
WRITE A STATEMENT THAT PROVES OR DISPROVES YOUR ORIGINAL HYPOTHESIS

10 Science variables Dependent Variables – The variable that is being measured in a experiment Independent Variable – The variable that is changed or being tested in an experiment Controlled Variables – The variables that are the same

11 Groups Experimental Group – The group exposed to the independent variable (they receive what is being tested) Control group – Group used for a comparison. (The Normal)

12 Valid Experiment One variable at a time Must be repeatable
Peer View – other scientist look over your finding for mistakes Scientist share their findings with the world Scientific Theory: an explanation very well supported over time by many observations, experiments, and evidence
