1 Chapter 1 Exploring Science

2 What does a scientist do?
They gather information from observations, look for patterns, form hypotheses, test hypothesis, experiment, analyze results, draw conclusions and communicate results.

3 Experiment An organized procedure for testing a hypothesis.

4 When doing an experiment, it is important to follow certain guidelines to reduce the chance of reaching wrong conclusions.

5 An Experiment has 2 set-ups.
1.) Control Set-Up 2.) Experimental Set-Up

6 Control Set-Up This is the standard for comparison.
How things would naturally happen.

7 Experimental Set-Up This contains the variable being tested.
Only one variable can be tested at one time.

8 Independent Variable The factor adjusted by the experimenter (the person doing the test). * laundry detergent * color of water * amount of sun light

9 Dependent Variable The factor whose value depends upon the value of the independent variable. * # of stains remaining * height of plants * # of flowers

10 Scientific Method Series of steps or guidelines followed by scientists when performing an experiment. * the better they follow the steps, the more accurate the results

11 5 Steps to the Scientific Method
1.) Determine the Problem. 2.) Make (Form) a Hypothesis. 3.) Test the Hypothesis. 4.) Record and Analyze the Results. 5.) Draw a Conclusion.

12 3 Ways to Test a Hypothesis.
1.) Experiment 2.) Model 3.) Observe

13 Most tests of a hypothesis will involve more than one way of testing.

14 Data Another word used when describing the results of an experiment.
* results are usually recorded in charts, tables, graphs and pictures

15 For a conclusion to be considered valid, the results must be able to be repeated.
* accurate records are important in science

16 When doing experiments in science, SAFETY always comes first!

17 Most experiments have warning symbols to remind scientists what the hazards are for that test.
* copy 4 safety symbols from the first page in your book * give the meaning of your symbols

18 The End
