1 Scientific Methods Ch. 2 Sec. 1

2 The Experimental Method
Science usually begins with observation. Observation leads to asking a question and gather info

3 Experimental Method 2. Form Hypothesis
Hypothesis = educated guess based on information gathered Is a complete statement that attempts to answer your question.

4 Experimental Method Prediction = logical statement about what will happen if the hypothesis is correct.

5 Experimental Method 3. Test Hypothesis = experiment
Experiment = a procedure designed to test a hypothesis under controlled conditions

6 Exp. Method Experiment should pinpoint cause and effect relationships.
2 factors Variable Control

7 Exp. Method Variable = factor of interest (what you change)
Experimental group

8 Exp. Method Control group= group that doesn’t receive experimental treatment Used to compare results

9 Exp. Method 4. Analyze/ organize Data
Data = info gathered from experiment Use tables and graphs

10 Exp. Method 5. Draw Conclusion
Analyze data and compare outcome with prediction or hypothesis

11 Exp. Method Conclusion May not be obvious so repeat experiment
