Introduction to Speech Communication

Types of Communication

Types of Verbal Communication Personal Communication Intrapersonal—the communication that takes place within you Interpersonal—informal communication with others

More Types of Communication Small-group Communication Communication that occurs in a group setting (3 or more people). Public Speaking Communication from one person to many people in a face-to-face situation.

More Types Mass/Public Communication One-way communication involving TV, radio, internet. *Social Media Combines interpersonal (one to one) and mass communication (one to many).

Difficulties of Public Speaking Requires careful message preparation. Requires a willingness & ability to face a large group. Requires sensitivity to subtle audience feedback.

General Purposes of Public Speaking To inform To persuade/bring about change To entertain

Types of Delivery used in Public Speaking Impromptu Off the cuff speaking with little or no time to prepare Manuscript Entire speech is written out and read Used when exact timing and/or wording is necessary
