Description of Course This year’s approach to English II British literature is a chronological one. Various texts from the Anglo-Saxon Era to the present will be examined. While learning to appreciate the literature through representative authors and connecting themes, students will further develop their skills in composing critical, analytic essays. Additionally, oral presentation and the research process are included within this class during the course of the year.

Course Objectives Strengthen critical reading and writing skills. Gain understanding of the writing process in order to compose a cohesive, analytic essay. Apply literary terms during the analysis process which will aid the student in understanding an author’s meanings and styles. Learn and implement study skills by being prepared for each class and meeting the requirements established by the state of Virginia’s curriculum.

Major Themes Coming of Age The Battle of the Sexes Life and Death Loss/Mortality The Hero Hubris Reflections of the culture

SOME LITERATURE WE WILL EXPLORE THIS YEAR…

1 ST Quarter Goals Note-taking and study skills Outlining Organization Proper agenda use Writing, writing, writing

Expectations Each student is expected to be prepared and ready to contribute to the class’ activities. Prepared for class means having the necessary book, supplies, and work. Failure to be prepared, as well as failure to participate in class discussions and activities, will result in a loss of points. Each student is expected to maintain academic honesty at all times. Cheating of any kind will result in a zero grade for the given assignment and may result in failure of the course.

Expectations Work MUST be turned in on time. Homework assignments are accepted up to one class after the assigned due date for half credit. Major papers and projects will be reduced one letter grade for EACH DAY it is late. In case of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to seek the information missed on the day he returns to school. A “homework buddy” is recommended for this reason. The student will make up any activities or quizzes in Titan Time. Homework, papers, or projects will be due upon return to class. Extra help is available during Titan Time and by appointment.
