Chapter 4 Applying for a Job

Personal Data Sheet  Lists information you will need to know when filling out a job application and applying for a job.  For your use only—never give to an employer.  Take with you when going to apply for a job.  Lists info like personal info, educational background, employment history, and references.

Tips for Completing a Job Application Form  If possible take home and make a couple of copies so you can practice before completing the actual application.  If fill out at business, use Personal Data Sheet.  Print or Type  If using ink, use same black or blue pen throughout

More Job Application Tips  Answer all questions honestly.  If don’t have an answer for the question or it doesn’t apply to you…draw a short line through the space provided  If asks for salary desired…answer Negotiable.  Ask references for permission before listing names.  List employment history in reverse order. (Most current listed first.)

More Job Application Tips  When asked reason for leaving previous jobs…be honest, but tactful. Good examples would be returned to school, left for better job, wanted to concentrate on school more.  Check everything over before mailing or handing to employer.  List a specific day to start...don’t say as soon as possible.  List a specific position that you are applying for or you never know what you may be hired for.

Contacting Potential Employers  Apply in Person  Walk into business and ask a manager if hiring.  First impressions are so very important.  Apply by Phone  Be organized before calling.  Call from quiet place and speak directly into the phone. No food or beverage in mouth.  Talk to a manager, be courteous, sound interested, ask for a definite appointment, but don’t sound pushy.  Make sure to write down appointment information.  Send a Letter of Application (Cover Letter)

Letter of Application (Cover Letter)  Paragraph One  Get the reader’s attention.  Actually apply for the job.  Paragraph Two  Describe Skills and Qualifications that will help you be successful in this job.  Paragraph Three  State that resume is enclosed.  Provide phone number to contact to set up an interview.  End with a catchy statement.
