Francis of Sales French Roman Catholic leader and preacher Worked to win back the district of Savoy in France from Calvinism -as a result, most people returned to the Catholic Church Founded a religious teaching order for women

Women and the Church Women began to take on more active roles in the Church Before the renaissance-lived in private convents By middle ages- nuns could help the poor, the orphaned and the sick Mary Ward of England began a network of schools for girls throughout Europe -Missionary influence was later formally recognized by the Church

Teresa of Avila Considered the most famous female spiritual leader Born in Spain in 1515 Became a nun at age 20 Father opposed to this idea but she ran away to a convent around 1536 Thought that current church practices were too lax so she followed her own new strict rules for fasting, praying and sleep Had deep spirituality, deep visions of Christ and fervor for the Catholic Church -inspired many would-be protestants to remain in the Church
