2 Radical Reformers 100s of Protestant sects developed, some more radical than others –Anabaptists Rejected infant baptism –Baptists, Quakers, Mennonites and Amish can trace their ancestry back to the Anabaptists

3 English Reformation John Wycliffe was calling for reform back in the early 1300s By 1520 English clergy debated the idea of reform, however it was not the work of religious leaders but was the job of King Henry VIII

4 Henry VIII and the English Reformation Henry VIII stood firmly against the Protestant Revolt In 1527 Henry wanted to end his marriage with Catharine of Aragon because she only produced one child, Mary –Henry wanted a boy –Henry asked the pope to annul the marriage and his request was refused

6 Break with Rome With the help of the British Parliament Henry passed the Act of Supremacy which made Henry not the Pope the head of the Church in England Those who opposed Henry were tried for treason –Sir Thomas More was executed and later became a Saint for his stand against Henry VIII

7 Church of England Henry rejected most of the protestant reforms Beside breaking away from Rome and using the English Bible he kept many of the traditions of the Catholic Church

8 The Catholic Reformation / Counter Reformation Protestant Reformation swept across Northern Europe Pope Paul III started the Catholic Reformation in order to battle the Protestant Reformation –Council of Trent 1545 Took steps to end abuses in the Church, provided stiff penalties for worldliness, corruption and schools to help educate the clergy
