What is genocide? Think of definitions, words, ideas, questions that you have about this term.

Genocide: The deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, religious, political or cultural/ethnic group.

November 1993: the United Nations sent peacekeepers to this small African nation to support the framework of peace established following the country’s civil war.

Definitions Hutu: Majority community in Rwanda that had been second class citizens during colonialization, rose to power after independence. Tutsi: Rwanda’s largest minority who ruled, Belgian colonists favored them. Arusha Accords: Peace agreement after civil war (between Hutus & Tutsis) calling for a democratically elected government. Hutus feel marginalized ( ↓ social class).

Interahamwe: Youth militia of the Hutu extremists trained by organizers to carry out genocide. Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR): Army of the Hutu government. Joined in genocide after president’s plane was shot down. Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF): Tutsi led rebels that ended the genocide without any help from the international community.

Apr 7: Hutu extremists set up roadblocks and go from house to house killing Tutsis and moderate Hutu politicians. Ten Belgian soldiers sent to guard the prime minister are tortured and killed along with the Prime Minister. Apr 8: RPF (Tutsi) reignite the civil war by trying to overthrow the Hutu government. Apr 21: UN withdraws all troops from Rwanda. Mid-May: Red Cross estimates 500,000 Rwandans are dead. Mid-July: RPF (Tutsi) capture Kigali and the genocide is over. An estimated 800,000 Rwandans are dead.
