3 Between April and June 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the space of 100 days The genocide was sparked by the death of the Rwandan president, when his plane was shot down on 6 th April 1994 However, ethnic tensions in Rwanda had been ongoing for many years. The animosity between the majority Hutus and the minority Tutsis has grown since colonial times. The two ethnic groups are similar but during colonisation the Belgiums considered the Tutsis as a superior group and as a result had better jobs and conditions. When the Belgians left in 1962, the Hutus took over. It was the Hutus who instigated the violence in 1994 and the majority of the dead were Tutsis. The Rwandan Patriotic Front (made up of Tutsi refugees and moderate Hutus) captured the government and 2 million Hutus fled to Zaire. The refugees faced disease, starvation and death in the refugee camps.
