3. 1884 Berlin Conference
Colonizing powers divided up Africa into 50 countries
No regard to ethnicity, tribe, languages, or religion
Result: conflict and fighting over boundaries in the future

4. After World War I
Belgium gains control of Rwanda and implements system of racial classification
Tutsis were more white looking and put in positions of authority (15%)
Hutus were discriminated against and made second class citizens

5. Hutus and Tutsis

6. 1959 Revolt
Hutus overthrow Tutsi government and elect a Hutu president
Mass killing of Tutsis takes place at this time- thousands killed or flee the country

7. Lead up to 1994 Genocide
Hate messages spread on the radio (Tutsis are called “cockroaches”)
Hutu radicals are meeting and distributing weapons (machetes)
Hate propaganda and death lists are distributed
Hutu president’s plane is shot down and Tutsis are blames (probably done by Hutu)

8. April 1994- The Genocide Begins
The Hutu militia (Interhamwe) and civilians begin the massacre of 800,000 to 1 million Tutsis and moderate Hutus (mostly with machetes)
250,000 women raped

9. The Failure of the UN and US
UN and US pass UNAMIR- United Nations Mission Assistance in Rwanda
Sent peacekeeping troops
Failed to do anything to stop or prevent the genocide

10. Why doesn’t the US help
The United States is still thinking about Somalia- we don’t want any part of third world country nation building

11. The Genocide Ends Genocide lasts 100 days
Tutsis take back control of the country
Hutus flee to the Congo
Rwandan genocide trials
Why didn’t the international community help more? Why didn’t the US help more?
