1 VIRGINIA’S DEVELOPMENT 1607: 1 st English colony in North America: Jamestown, Virginia FOUNDED BY: joint-stock company, Virginia Company PURPOSE: mercantilism, find/send riches back to England; mostly settled by men ( Britain is the owner and colonists are the tenants) 1608 JOHN SMITH: leader of Jamestown who implored settlers to plant and sow

JAMESTOWN Jamestown almost failed: –Full of illness, starvation, laziness and NO GOLD –John Smith arrived later to Jamestown and quickly became the leader, noting the slogan “He that will not work, shall not eat!” Chief Powhatan- leader of Native Americans who previously settled land now called Jamestown – Daughter of Chief Powhatan Pocahontas later married Rolfe –HEY DISNEY: POCAHONTAS DID NOT MARRY JOHN SMITH!

BACON’S REBELLION 1.revealed power of former servants 2.Virginia House of Burgesses passed laws to regulate slavery so poor whites would no longer side with slaves against rich white colonists

TOBACCO: JOHN ROLFE  major $ crop/labor- intensive. Cultivated by Indentured servants  4 to 7 years of servitude in exchange for passage to New World. Later used slaves POWHATAN: initially helped colonists but later began raiding/attacking colonists due to cultural conflicts(settlers wouldn’t have survived the first winter without the help of the Native Americans) Rolfe married Pocahontas, Disney says it was John Smith
