What does persuade mean? Persuade means to induce to believe by appealing to reason or understanding; convince.

What makes a Great Persuasive Letter? It tells the goal-something he writer wants the audience to do- at the beginning. It uses strong reasons to support the goal. (It helps to persuade readers to believe a writer’s ideas) The letter is written in correct letter form. The voice is positive and polite. NOTE: Choosing reasons that are powerful and convincing can make readers more likely to agree your goal.

NOTE: Choosing reasons that are powerful and convincing can make readers more likely to agree your goal. Example: INSTEAD OF THIS….. THE AUTHOR WROTE THIS. Trees help us. They are good for the air... We would die without trees. They make oxygen and help take dust and stuff of the air.

Business Letter Form: The heading: Includes the writer's address and the date. The inside address: Is the address of the person or business to whom you are writing. The greeting: Usually begins with “Dear”. It includes the title or the name of the person to whom you are writing. A colon follows the name. The body: Includes the writer’s message. The closing: Is a sign-off word or phrase followed by the signature. In what part of the letter would the writer give the goal and reasons?

Activities to do: Label the closing, signature and examples of reasons. Identify persuasive words in the letter. (please, need to learn, important, big step). Suggest a strong reason for these themes: People throw out too much garbage (SB 22-23) It is easy to help save the rain forest (SB 18-19)

IDEA- SUPPORT MAP Writing a letter to the principal about using less paper in the school. Use less paper in the school Paper comes from tress and cutting down tress is bad for the planet. Lots of paper is thrown away as garbage every day. Students must learn, planet- friendly habits.

Polite and positive voice:  Is how the writing sounds.  Using positive words will make your writing sound polite.  Using negative words will make your writing sound angry.  Readers will be more likely to listen to your reasons if you use a positive voice and polite words. Example: NEGATIVE VOICEPOSITIVE VOICE It is terrible that we all waste to much paper every day. It would be great for our school to do the right thing and use less paper!

Your turn….
