2 What is Formal Letter? A formal letter, also known as a business letter, is a letter written in formal language with a specific structure and layout. Formal letters are generally used by businesses to communicate with other businesses and individuals to communicate with businesses. The main features are a polite and respectful tone, short length, correct format and no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

3 The Stucture of Formal Letter Heading address: the writer’s full address and the full date (top right/left) Date (top right) Inside address: the name and address of the person/ company to whom the letter is addressed. (after date- left) Greeting: whom the letter is for beginning with “Dear” followed by the person’s name

4 Body Body clearly explains the content and purpose of letter or problem Complimentary closing (left) ex: sincerely, sincerely yours Signature (left) *additional: enclosure-attachment

7 The Sturucture of Informal Letter 1. Date: The date when the letter is written 2. Greetings and Name of Recipient: The greeting usually starts with the word ‘Dear’ followed by the given name of the recipient 3. Introduction: the opening of a letter. It may include greetings like ‘How are you?’. 4. Body: the main body of the letter. It includes the message that the writer wants to tell the recipient.

8 5. Closure: indicates the letter is going to end. The writer may ask the recipient to reply here. 6. Complimentary Close: short expression includes a few words on one line. It ends with a comma. Some examples: ‘Yours sincerely,’ ‘Best regards,’ ‘Love,’ 7. Signature

9 Language Use in an Informal Letter 1. Formality and Accuracy Formal and accurate grammar and spelling are expected, depending on the relationship between the writer and the recipient. 2. Style Language use may be personal.
