Happy Thursday  Take out whatever you use for class notes and be ready to start when the bell rings!

The Rise of Rome Today’s LEQs: Why did Rome choose to expand from city-state to empire? What stages marked that expansion?

Early Rome  Located on Mediterranean Sea  Etruscans were early owners of Rome  Founded c. 753 BCE  Ruled by kings  Provided city with paved streets, public buildings, defensive walls, and large temples  Ideal location!  Look at maps… Why do you think this is?

Rise of the Roman Republic  In 509 BCE, Roman nobility overthrew last Etruscan king and began a republic: all citizens who voted held power  Built Roman forum – political and civic center  Who was a citizen?  Patricians (wealthy, privileged)  Some foreigners  EVENTUALLY, Plebeians (commoners)

Rome Expands!  STRONG ARMY facilitates expansion  Sometimes crushes enemies; sometimes granted citizenship  “Piecemeal” process; not built off existing empire  Punic Wars ( BCE) – Romans clashed with Carthage  Three conflicts between 264 and 146BCE  Arose from economic competition and grew into struggle for supremacy in the region  Third Punic War: Carthage destroyed, Rome rules the region & becomes naval power

Could Republic Survive Expansion? (Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems)  Imperial expansion brought wealth and power to Rome but not without problems  Unequal distribution of wealth aggravated class tensions and conflict arose over political and social policies  The need to administer conquered lands efficiently strained the capacities of the Roman republic

Activity: The Gracchi Brothers  Log on to  Click on “see more” then click on “The Gracchi”  You need to work with one other person on this.
