The Roman Empire at Its Height, 117 AD 1.Rome was a city that was located on a small hilltop village on the Tiber River. 2.The location of Rome provided security and trade opportunities to the citizens. 3.In 509 BC, Rome overthrew its king and became a republic. 4.Rome dominated most of the Italian peninsula. 5.Rome clashed with Carthage as it began to grow. Carthage was a rich trading city in Northern Africa. 6.Rome and Carthage battled each other in the three Punic Wars. Eventually Rome captured and destroyed Carthage. 7.At its height, the Roman Empire encircled the Mediterranean Sea and covered all of Western Europe and half of Britain.
