Skills and Techniques Preparation, Action, Recovery

Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson you will; Understand what is meant by a Skill and a Technique Be able to break a skill down into it’s 3 stages (Preparation, Action and Recovery)

SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES A SKILL Is an action that we use in an activity Cartwheel, passing, shooting are all examples of skills A skill tells us about the purpose of a movement. For example in the skill of passing in Rugby; the purpose is to throw the ball to a team mate.

SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES TECHNIQUE A technique is a way of performing a skill For example; If the skill is shooting in Basketball, techniques for shooting would be the lay-up or a jump shot. Selecting which technique to use when performing in a game is vital to the success of the skill. E.g If the other team are tall in Basketball, I would use my jump shot to shoot rather than a lay-up.

SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES Serve Passing Balance ACTIVITY SKILL Life saving tow

SIMPLE AND COMPLEX SKILLS Some skills are more difficult to perform than others For example, a Back-flip is more complex than standing on one leg. This is due to a number of reasons

SIMPLE AND COMPLEX SKILLS Simple Skills have; Few parts Physically undemanding Little co-ordination Simple order of movements One movement at a time Easy environment Complex Skills have; Many parts Physically demanding Good co-ordination Complicated order of movements Many movements at the same time Difficult environment

A skill/technique can be described as being simple or complex ACTIVITY SKILL/ TECHNIQUE SIMPLE COMPLEX Gymnastics Balance Headstand Basketball Lay up

Skills can be broken down into 3 phases or parts Preparation Action Recovery

Tennis Serve Preparation – Toss the ball into the air, and pull the racket back. Action – Lift up and throw the face of the racket to make contact with the ball. (Throwing action) Recovery - Follow through in the direction you wish the ball to travel
