1 STARTER ACTIVITY Answer the following question.
What are the advantages of using model performers to help you improve your own performance? (3 marks) You have 5 minutes under exam conditions.

2 STARTER ACTIVITY Mark either your own or a partners homework using the highlighted words as an example. What are the advantages of using model performers to help you improve your own performance? Model performers can show me the detail required to help me improve. I can use video to help me see good performance over and over again. If I need to I can watch it in slow motion if the action is too fast for me to see, for example, a smash in badminton. If I pay close attention I can see what they do well in a game, and also how they perform specific points of technique. I think this is helpful because model performers seem to make their performance look so easy, often showing that they have ample time in between shots. I want to be able to copy this. By comparing my performance to a model performer, I can identify my strengths and weaknesses. I definitely find that watching model performers motivates me to try harder.

3 To use movement analysis of your serve
Lesson focus: Key concept 1, key feature 2 – the classification of skills Learning Intentions To explain the classification of skills in badminton to a partner (KC 1, KF 2). To use movement analysis of your serve

4 SKILL CLASSIFICATIONS
Classifying a skill helps us determine which type of practice are most likely to improve a specific skill. No two skills are the same so they exist on a continuum (line).

5 SKILL CLASSIFICATIONS
…ARE SKILLS WHICH TAKE PLACE IN A CONSTANTLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT AND ARE CONSEQUENTLY AFFECTED BY IT OPEN SKILLS CLOSED SKILLS …ARE SKILLS WHICH TAKE PLACE IN A FIXED ENVIRONMENT The skill of driving in golf is essentially a closed skill but when you apply it to a round of golf it involves certain open demands e.g hazards, bunkers, rough, wind etc.

6 Performer is not in complete control of the game-unpredictable
Participants have to constantly make decisions on how to react/act Affected by the ‘environment’ E.g. weather/ opponents/playing surface OPEN SKILL Examples of sports activities which use open skills are games. E.g. football/ rugby/netball/ basketball/ hockey etc… These types of sports/ games contain a great deal of uncertainty

7 Performer in complete control of the activity with few distractions
E.g. Gymnastic activities like a forward roll/diving CLOSED SKILL No outside influences from weather/opponents, etc… Pre-learned movement patterns

8 Badminton example! What about a you as a server in badminton? What about you returning a serve?

9 SKILL CLASSIFICATIONS
…ARE SKILLS WHICH REQUIRE LITTLE DECISION MAKING AND ONLY BASIC MOVEMENT PATTERNS E.G.RUNNING, JUMPING ETC. SIMPLE SKILLS …ARE SKILLS WHICH REQUIRE THOUGHT AND DECISION MAKING E.G BADMINTON SERVE, HIGH JUMP ETC. COMPLEX SKILLS

10 Factors affecting whether a skill is simple or complex
The number of decisions to be made The amount of information to be processed The speed at which information is processed and decisions made Factors affecting whether a skill is simple or complex The accuracy involved The amount and type of feedback Different parts – subroutines? Examples: SIMPLE: To run the 100m in a fast time requires considerable speed (physical fitness) and visualisation (mental fitness). The skill is relatively simple as it involves the straight forward repetition of movements with low level co-ordination and decision making. COMPLEX: A handspring vault is made up of different subroutines.

11 SKILL CLASSIFICATIONS
…ARE SKILLS WHICH HAVE A CLEAR BEGINNING AND END E.G BADMINTON SERVE. DISCRETE SKILLS …ARE SKILLS WHICH ARE MADE UP OF A NUMBER OF SKILLS WHICH ARE PUT TOGETHER IN A SEQUENCE OR SERIES E.G JAVELIN THROW. SERIAL SKILLS …ARE SKILLS WHICH HAVE NO CLEAR BEGINNING OR END AND ARE REPITIOUS E.G FRONT CRAWL, CYCLING. CONTINUOUS SKILLS

12 Place the following sports on a skill classification continuum
TASK IN 2’s. Place the following sports on a skill classification continuum Simple Complex Badminton serve High jump Running Jumping Closed Open Soccer interception Rugby Hook Tennis serve Tennis volley Forward roll Saving a goal Golf swing

13 Place the following sports on a skill classification continuum
TASK IN 2’s. Place the following sports on a skill classification continuum Simple Complex Badminton serve Jumping High jump Running Closed Open Rugby Hook Soccer interception Tennis volley Forward roll Saving a goal Tennis serve Golf swing

14 HOMEWORK Memorise the characteristics of a skilled performer. Your homework is to answer the following question. Explain 2 different methods you could use to investigate the movement factors required when playing a game of singles. 5 marks.
