Skills and Techniques Ways of Developing Skills

Skill Learning When you are learning a new skill or technique it is important that; 1) The environment you are working in is safe to do so.

Skill Learning 2) you have a way of comparing your performance to one that is deemed to be of high standard. This performance is called a Model Performer

Skill Learning When you are learning a skill the teacher will often demonstrate what the skill should look like. This could also be through a video or film of an elite performer

Skill Learning This allows you or a partner to compare your performance to that of the model performer and suggest improvements.

Skill Learning You will often work with a partner when learning new skills. Your partner will help you to learn a skill as they can record the pieces of the skill that you do well and those which are weakness.

Skill Learning Information can be recorded in 2 main ways; 1) Observation Schedule 2) Video Recording

Skill Learning The two main ways of learning new skills are; 1) Gradual Build-Up 2) Whole – Part - Whole

Skill Learning Gradual build-up is when you break a skill into stages and learn each stage at a time as they become more difficult. 1 2 3 4

Skill Learning This way of learning a skill allows you to learn complex or dangerous skills in a safe environment while your confidence grows.

Skill Learning e.g. Basketball lay-up shot; This skill/technique is complex as it is made up of lots of small parts.

Skill Learning e.g Basketball Lay-up Stage 1; Stand at the basket and shoot for the corner of the small square on the back board.

Skill Learning e.g. Basketball Lay-up Stage 2; Step onto your left foot and jump up to shoot towards the small square on the backboard

Skill Learning e.g. Basketball Lay-up Stage 3; Two step run up, right then left, jump up and shoot off the backboard.

Skill Learning e.g. Basketball Lay-up Stage 4; Bounce the ball once, take a two step run up, right then left, jump and shoot off the back board.

Skill Learning After you have done these stages and can do them confidently you can now do the whole skill and can now begin to practice it in more game like situations.

Skill Learning Whole-Part-Whole is when you do the whole skill, then practice a part of it which is weak before performing the whole skill again.

Skill Learning This method is used for skills that are simple or are not dangerous. It allows the performer to get a feel for the skill before identifying specific weaknesses that need to be changed.

Skill Learning e.g. Swimming Front Crawl In this you would swim front crawl while a partner or the teacher watched what you were doing

Skill Learning e.g. Front Crawl Using the information they have gathered from watching you they will be able to highlight any weaknesses in your performance e.g. the arm action.

Skill Learning Front Crawl You would then work on the specific weakness highlighted in isolation until it has been fixed. You would then put this part back into the whole skill again to see the improvements made.

Skill Learning Questions Describe what is meant by Whole- part-whole Describe what is meant by Gradual Build-up

Skill Learning Questions Place a tick next to the statements that are true to whole-part-whole I use Whole-part-whole if the skill is dangerous I use Whole-part-whole if I have experienced an activity I use Whole-part-whole to find a weakness to work on I use Whole-part-whole to learn a skill gradually

Skill Learning Questions Describe how you used whole-part- whole to learn a skill. Skill How did you learn

Skill Learning Questions Explain why you would use Gradual Build-up

Skill Learning Questions Choose an individual activity Choose a skill Describe how you learned this skill using Gradual build-up

Skill Learning Questions Choose a team activity Choose a skill Describe how you learned this skill using Gradual build-up

Skill Learning Questions What is meant by feedback? How does feedback help to develop a skill towards the automatic stage?

Skill Learning Questions What are the main types of feedback? 1) 2)

Skill Learning Questions What are the main methods of feedback? 1) 2) 3)

Skill Learning Questions Choose one method of feedback Method Describe how you recorded your performance using this method

Skill Learning Questions What are the 3 Stages of learning? Choose a skill/technique you can perform automatically Skill Describe the benefits of doing this skill automatically
