1 Standard Grade Physical Education
Skills and Techniques 1

2 SKILLS & TECHNIQUES A technique is a way of performing a skill skill
movement with a purpose Shooting Passing Dribbling Catching Marking Set Shot Jump Lay-up Skill:

3 Simple Skills EASY/SIMPLE SKILLS Few Sub-routines Physically
Undemanding Little co-ordination needed Few judgments to be made Simple order of movements One movement at a time Easy Environment e.g. Indoors e.g. Set Shot

4 Complex Skills e.g. Lay-up in Basketball Physically Demanding
Many Sub-routines Physically Demanding Co-ordination is vital Many judgements to be made Many movements at the same time e.g. Lay-up in Basketball

5 Task 1: Basic Skills and Complex Skills
Chest Pass Lay Up Shot Basic Skill Complex Skill

6 Task 2: Basic Skills and Complex Skills
Back flip on beam Arabesque balance Complex Skill Basic Skill

7 Task 3: Basic Skills and Complex Skills
Long Distance Running High Jump Basic Skill Complex Skill

8 Task 3: Past Paper Question

9 Breaking down Skills 3 Stages (P.A.R) Preparation: Action: Recovery:
What takes place immediately before the action. Action: The action Recovery: What takes place immediately after the action

10 Methods of Learning a Skill
1. Whole Part Whole Practice the whole skill Pick out a part of the skill that is weak Practice the weak part of the skill Put the whole skill together again to see if improvements have been made

11 Methods of Learning a Skill
Example of Whole Part Whole 1. The Whole skill is practiced Example: Overhead Clear 2. Part of the skill (weakness) is practiced Example: Footwork 3. The whole skill is practiced Example: Overhead Clear

12 When would you use Whole Part Whole?
1. When the participant has previous experience of practising the skill. 2. When a performer can perform the whole skill. Why would you use Whole Part Whole? 1. To identify weaknesses and practice them. 2. To isolate (select) part of skill to practice it. 3. Easier to concentrate on one part of a skill.

13 Methods of Learning a Skill
2. Gradual Build Up Learning a skill in parts which become increasingly difficult at each stage. Breaking the skill down into small steps Practicing the skill from basic level and gradually adding to the practice to increase difficulty.

14 Methods of Learning a Skill
Example of Gradual Build Up Basketball: Lay Up Shot Step 1: Lay up from side of basket with no run up. Step 2: Lay up from one step then jump. Step 3: Lay up from two step then jump. . Step 4: Lay up from dribble followed by two step then jump.

15 When would you use Gradual Build Up?
When learning a complex skill 2. When confidence levels are low 3. If you have never practiced the skill before

16 Why would you use Gradual Build Up?
Makes the skill safe To learn correct technique. To gain confidence. To eliminate (reduce) errors. To master each part of skill before progressing to next level Allows learner to learn complex skills
