Region D 2009 Conference Bid Charlotte Highlights –Easy access Airport and Interstate Highways –Diverse city with many options for entertainment –Several universities and colleges to provide educational opportunities –Industry base that ranges from financial to technical

Proposed Conference Agenda Friday, March 13 –Professional Development CEU Course –Tours (potential) National Whitewater Rafting Center Duke Power Generation Facility Lowe’s Motor Speedway –Evening Welcome Event at Discovery Place in Uptown Charlotte

Proposed Conference Agenda Saturday, March 14 –Conference meetings and workshops –Career Fair –Speed Mentoring Lunch –Banquet Saturday Evening in Uptown Charlotte Sunday, March 15 –Brunch –Social Event

Location Duke Centennial Hall, home to the Lee College of Engineering was dedicated in Fall DCH contains auditoriums and classrooms that will be used for the conference. All conference workshops on Saturday will be held in this facility. Parking is located outside of the building.

Possible Workshops Workshop Topics –Engineering Global Communications International Assignment Studying Abroad Preparing for the Global Workforce –Engineering Global Infrastructure Energy Around the Globe Automotive Industry Travel Infrastructure (Airports, Roads, and Ports)

Possible Workshops Workshop Topics –Engineering Global Culture Overcoming Intercultural Differences Expectations of the Virtual Workforce including International Teams Methods for Integrating Cultures –“Big Five” by Dr. Howard from CentACS

Speed Mentoring Lunch Saturday Lunch –Speed Mentoring sessions will be conducted between Collegiate Members and Professionals. The Professionals will include Career Fair participants and SWE members. –Additional time for lunch will be provided to allow sessions and eat lunch.

Potential Sponsors Charlotte has many diverse companies including many small engineering firms. Funding for the conference will be sought from all sources including: Bank of America Wachovia IBM Microsoft City of Charlotte Duke Energy Black and Veatch WK Dickson Brown & Caldwell SAIC

Transportation Travel To and From Charlotte: –Charlotte Douglas International Airport –Interstates I-77 and I-85 Travel within Charlotte –LYNX light rail system –Charter buses

Budget A complete budget will be prepared within 60 days of winning the bid for the conference –Conference pricing target: Professional $75 Collegiate $40 –Hotel Room Cost Double Room ~$100 Quad Room ~$125

Inclusion and Diversity UNC Charlotte’s student sections of SHPE and NSBE have expressed interest in partnering with us to host the conference which lines up with our national alliance with these organizations. Professional members from both groups will be invited to participate in the SWE Region D conference.
