2
Overview Summit participants Findings from participant survey Introduction of minority focused engineering organizations

Summit Participants AACEI AAEE ABET AIME ANS ASCE ASEE ASME ASSE CAHSEE GEM IEEE ISPE JETS MAES MESA NACME NAMEPA NICE NSBE NSPE OSA SACNAS SAE SFPE SHPE SPIE SWE WEPAN
4
Survey Results Twenty-one societies responded – Five “large” disciplinary societies – Eight minority focused or outreach organizations – Eight smaller technical societies
5
Survey Results Diversity is a high priority for all respondents Level of current activity varies widely All respondents are interested in collaboration
6
Survey Results Diversity programs in the disciplinary/technical societies are primarily focused on society members and working professionals. Some organizations currently have no activities, but are interested in how to get started. Others have well established committees with a variety of programs, including publications, grants to local and student sections, leadership development for society members, speakers and other activities at annual meetings.
7
Survey Results Where is diversity addressed within the organization? Board on Minorities and Women Women in Engineering Committee Committee on Diversity and Women Diversity Acceleration Council Diversity Task Force
8
Survey Results Mentoring programs Special issue of journal Minority leadership development Scholarships Sessions at annual meeting Newsletter Grants to local sections
9
Survey Results Budgets range from $0 or “as needed” to $200,000 per year Staffing ranges from “as needed” to full time professional support Funding comes from general society budget
10
Survey Results Goals for Collaboration – Increased diversity – Pooling of resources – Joint meetings – Improved effectiveness – Networking – Share program success and failure – Collaborative focus on national policy – Win/win
11
Survey Results Challenges for collaboration – Turf battles – Resources – Perceived competition – Varied missions – Differing priorities – International focus – No “culture of collaboration”
12
