HISTORY OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY? Educational technology is the use of technology to support the learning process. It is also known variously as e-learning, instructional technology and learning technology.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN ITS BROADCAST TERM Is the application of scientific findings in our method, process or procedure of working in the field of education in order to effect learning.

It embraces curriculum and instructional design, learning environment, theories of teaching- learning. It is also a field study and profession.

E DUCATIONAL M EDIA AND I TS R ELATED T ERMS Educational and Instruction Education is process of imparting learning.

It is an enterprise of supplying the conditions which ensure growth or adequacy of life irrespective of age while instruction is the act of imparting learning and of providing activities, materials and guidance that facilities learning in either formal or informal situations.

E DUCATIONAL T ECHNOLOGY AND I NSTRUCTIONAL T ECHNOLOGY Educational technology is a “complex, integrated process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices, and organization for analyzing problems and devising, implementing, evaluating, and managing solutions to those problems, involved in all aspects of human learning”.

I NSTRUCTIONAL T ECHNOLOGY Has been defined as “applying scientific knowledge about human learning to the practical tasks of teaching and learning”.

E DUCATIONAL T ECHNOLOGY Is more than instructional technology in the same way that education is more than instruction. Technology integration is part of instructional technology which in turn, is part of educational technology.

B ROADCAST AND M ASS M EDIA The term ‘broadcast media’ covers a wide spectrum of different communication methods that disseminate information to a large number of recipients via telecom such as television and radio.

M ASS M EDIA Are those which are envisioned and design to reach a very large number of audience via newspapers, magazines, comics, radio, television and the World Wide Web.

A UDIO, V ISUAL, AND A UDIO -V ISUAL M EDIA An audio media emphasizes the use of hearing such as radio, audio discs, recordings, language lab, diagrams, maps, models, etc.

Audio-Visual media emphasize the use of hearing and seeing TV, videotapes/ discs, sound filmstrips, printed materials with recorded sound.

H ARDWARE AND S OFTWARE Hardware is equipment and related electronic and mechanical components while software refers to programs, printouts, or instructional materials that go with the machine.

P RINT AND N ON -P RINT M EDIA Printed word is used predominantly in transmitting information. Examples are guide sheets, handouts, study guides, manuals, newsletters, books.

While in the non-print media, the information is transmitted predominantly through AV media.
