Evaluation Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product? Jamie Beveridge

The core, niche audience for the film would generally be people over the age of 15, due to the fact that it may contain disturbing scenes, such as the sinister music and connotations of a completely barren park, which are unsuitable for children. Due to these, I think that the classification for our piece would be “15”, due to it containing some of the features clarified by the BBFC, such as: Strong threat and menace. Dark or unsettling tone, unsuitable for a “12” Despite this, the films that I researched that influenced this film tended to be rated “18”, such as Se7en and The Usual Suspects, which also incorporated a great deal of conventions from the psychological thriller genre that our piece used, including confusion surrounding characters’ identities. The broader, one off audience for the film would likely be people that attend film festivals, as our film is independent so would likely be shown at a film festival rather than being shown at cinemas all around the country. These would not necessarily be fans of the thriller genre, so may not watch the film again outside of a film festival. If the film were to have created a buzz at a festival in which it would be shown, knowledge of the film could spread by word of mouth, prompting people to g and view it. This also applies to bloggers and reviewers, as their opinions can strongly influence peoples’ desire to view a film. If a prominent reviewer was to give the film a positive review, a larger audience would be generated based on their opinion. Our piece is more likely to attract male viewers, as Thriller films’ audiences tend to be mostly male, and as we have followed many typical conventions of Thriller films, our would be no different.

This is David Blake. He is 17 years old and lives in Brighton. His pastimes include Playing video games, either with his friends or by himself, and going to gigs, generally locally. He is not bothered by his appearance, so does not tend to purchase his clothes in popular high street shops such as Topman, or Urban Outfitters, preferring the cheaper alternatives. He tends to enjoy watching films like Se7en, The Usual Suspects, and Memento, as his preferred genre is Psychological Thrillers. This also shows in the types of video games that he likes to play, as thriller games such as Heavy Rain, LA Noire and Silent Hill are his favourites. The television programmes that he tends to watch are generally in the crime thriller genre, such as Dexter or Boardwalk Empire, but he enjoys seeing this genre incorporate a creepy element. Due to this, his favourite programme to watch is Luther. The music he tends to listen to falls into the “Rock” genre, and he harbours a strong dislike for “manufactured” music, like pop and dance, and especially any music in the Top 40. He often listens to Kerrang! Radio for the up-to-date rock music. The magazines that he likes to read focus mainly on one of two subjects; Film, and Rock music. He has subscriptions to both Empire magazine, so he can keep track of all the new releases, and Rock Sound, due to his love of the rock genre. I think our film would appeal to him as it has been noted that his preferred genre is Psychological Thrillers, which our piece is. He enjoys watching films and television programmes that have a creepy feel to them, as we have incorporated in our project. He would be very likely to attend a cinema screening of this film if it was shown locally, as he is a film fanatic, as shown by his subscription to a film magazine. As well as this, our film is similar to many he likes, such as Memento, Se7en and the Usual Suspects.
